GCF Approves Grant to Enhance Belize’s Fisheries Sector

UNDP partners with the Statistical Institute of Belize and Ministry of Economic Development to enhance the country’s ability to assess and address poverty
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Economic Development signed an agreement to partner with the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) on the development and implementation of an annual Monetary Poverty Measure (MPM) and to assist in the continued development of the national Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) statistics program. This support will serve to enhance the country’s capacity to assess and address poverty, including through its policymaking processes.

Belize takes Next Step as a Global Leader in Natural Capital and Innovative Finance Solutions
On January 30, the Government of Belize, led by the Ministry of Economic Development in collaboration with the Blue Bond and Finance Permanence Unit and the Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute, partnered with Stanford University’s Natural Capital Project (NatCap) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to convene a workshop titled "Monitoring Progress Toward a Prosperous, Sustainable Future."

The Government of Belize has received substantial grant funding of BZ$3,157,028 dedicated to advancing critical climate initiatives. In a groundbreaking move toward sustainable and responsible climate finance management, the Ministry of Economic Development (MED) is the first government entity to oversee and manage funds from the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

ISFMI Australian Delegation Leads Fire Management Workshop in Belize
The Ministry of Economic Development and the Belize Forest Department are hosting the International Savanna Fire Management Initiative (ISFMI) on a visit to Belize as part of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) readiness project “Traditional Savanna Fire Management Readiness Proposal to facilitate Emissions Reductions in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) Sector in Belize.”

MED Hands Over Road Safety Toolkits for Schools to MoECST
On September 25, 2023, the Second Road Safety Project, under the Ministry of Economic Development (MED), handed over 400 hundred Road Safety Toolkits to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST). Plans underway to improve water services on Ambergris Caye
The topic of adequate water services and a connection to a proper wastewater system in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, is a task every administration on the island has tried to tackle with help from experts in this area. The current administration, headed by Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, is working to establish a new water plant in northern Ambergris Caye and upgrade the present facilities (south water plants and wastewater system) to make them climate resilient and sustainable.
