Government and Conservation Partners Sign Protected Areas Co-Management Agreements

On December 1, 2022, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management officially entered into public-private partnerships (or co-management) for several protected areas across the National Protected Areas System (NPAS) with several conservation partners.

Belize and Taiwan Strengthen Partnership through Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention

On December 1, 2022, the Government of Belize through the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), held the closing ceremony for the Belize Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention (BURDP) and launched the inception of a US$1.6 million project entitled Flood Warning Capacity Improvement for the Belize River Basin.

Groundbreaking for the “Building Climate Change Resilience and Social Integration of Displaced People in Settlements of Western Belize” Project

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) embarked on a project entitled “Building Climate Change Resilience and Social Integration of Displaced People in Settlements of Western Belize.” The ground breaking ceremony was held in Billy White Village on November 24, 2022.

Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Hosts First Belize Climate Change Week

The Ministry of Sustainable Dev. Climate Change & Disaster Risk Management through the Belize National Climate Change Office and in collaboration with the Belize National Biodiversity Office hosted the first-ever Belize Climate Change Week from October 11th to 14th, 2022, at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. The theme is “Enhancing Belize’s Position in Global Climate Action.”

Government of Belize Initiates the Development of a Groundwater Monitoring System for Aquifers

The Belize National Climate Change Office within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management along with the National Hydrological Service within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum and Mining have joined efforts to develop a groundwater monitoring system for the management of aquifers in Belize. This system will serve as a tool to track the impacts of climate change in the water sector. It will also be useful for the National Hydrological Service and other government agencies and non-state partners to identify risks in water supply for diverse groundwater users in Belize.

Ministry of Sustainable Development Hosts Stakeholder Consultation in Placencia

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management held a stakeholder consultation with the Placencia Village Council, the Placencia Tour Guide Association, and the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) on strengthening cooperation for improved management of the Laughing Bird Caye National Park.

Signing of Formal Agreement between the Department of the Environment and the University of Belize

While the agreement is primarily focused on marine pollution from plastics, it also extends itself in allowing both parties to engage in research in thematic areas of mutual concern in promoting a healthier environment.

The Government of Belize, with Support from the UNDP, hosts the “Climate Change Catalogue Showcase”

On Thursday, the 30th June 2022, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management (MSDCCDRM) hosted its first “Climate Change Catalogue Showcase”, which, as the name suggests, provides the opportunity for observer constituencies, interested Parties and the Ministry to showcase existing work programmes and progress made towards the “building of a more resilient Belize”.
