Taxi drivers ask authorities for resolution on soliciting at the points of entry

On January 9th, San Pedro Taxi Federation members expressed their concerns about the lack of enforcement against unauthorized soliciting, which they believe undermines their livelihoods and disrupts fair competition. A protest, held outside the San Pedro Town Council, aimed to stress the need for better regulation and support for licensed taxi operators. The taxi drivers argue that the current situation allows unlicensed individuals to solicit passengers at key locations, resulting in financial losses for legitimate drivers. They call for stricter enforcement measures to protect their interests and ensure a level playing field in the transportation industry.

Water taxi fees to increase

The water taxi fare for traveling to and from the Cayes has increased following an announcement from the Belize Port Authority (BPA) on January 1st. The BPA raised the Passenger User Fee (Port Fee) from BZ$2 to BZ$3. As a result, San Pedro Belize Express has increased ticket prices by BZ$2 for round trips and BZ$1 for one-way trips from Belize City. In contrast, Caribbean Sprinters have stated that their prices will remain unchanged. Other companies, such as Thunderbolt, which operates the route between San Pedro and Corozal, have not yet adjusted their prices.

San Pedro Belize Express launches upgraded service to Chetumal, Quintana

San Pedro Belize Express launched the maiden voyage of their Three Star Voyager vessel for runs from San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, to Chetumal Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Saturday, February 24th. The ferry service will include runs between Belize City, Caye Caulker, and San Pedro and will now have extended service to Chetumal. The passenger boat leaves from the Caye Caulker port at 7AM, stops at San Pedro's International Terminal at 8:30AM for immigration purposes, and then leaves for Chetumal. The vessel returns at 3:30PM Mexican time.

Water taxi companies to relocate from downtown San Pedro

A less trafficked and congested downtown San Pedro has always been in the local government's plan. While this has been a difficult task in the past, the current San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is working closely with stakeholders to achieve this goal. One of the expected changes is the relocation of the water taxi companies. The two operating on the island's east side that run to and from Belize City are San Pedro Belize Express (SPBE) and Caribbean Sprinter. The SPBE has started constructing its boat terminal south of town along Coconut Drive.

Belize Port Authority releases approved fares for water taxis

The Belize Port Authority (BPA) issued the most recent approved fares for water taxis highlighting that it has not authorized an increase in passenger fares. The BPA noted that any increase is unlawful and would not be tolerated. They ask commuters to report any attempt by a water taxi company to charge more than the approved fares by calling the telephone number 222-5665 or email to [email protected].

Belize Port Authority Mandates Boat Manifest

The implementation of a mandatory boat manifest for water taxi companies operating within Belize came into effect on Thursday, August 1st. Passengers traveling to the islands from the Belize City via Ocean Ferry or San Pedro Belize Express water taxi companies, including Thunderbolt from Corozal Town, will now be required to have with them an identification document (ID) to purchase a ticket.
