GOB Launches Phase Two of the COVID-19 Unemployment Relief and MSME Program

Government of Belize, through a collaborative effort led by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Commerce, the Ministry of Labour, Local Government and Rural Development, and BELTRAIDE, hereby announces the launch of phase two of Government’s COVID-19 Unemployment Relief Program, incorporating the previously announced MSME Support Program.

IDB approves loan to support Belize’s vulnerable population affected by COVID-19

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a loan of US$12 million for Belize to support the implementation of the COVID-19 Unemployment Relief Program. The loan program will provide protection for the vulnerable population affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, it will provide cash transfers for a period of 12 weeks to currently unemployed individuals, formerly working in the informal or formal sectors, particularly but not solely in tourism, and who are not on the rosters of other cash transfer programs.

Unemployment Relief Portal are inactive

The public is once again advised that the hotlines/help numbers that were listed on the Unemployment Relief Portal are inactive due to public officers returning to their substantive posts. A public notice will be issued when the hotline/help numbers are reactivated. In the meantime, kindly send information and queries via email to [email protected].

Update on Unemployment Relief Program: 43,726 applications approved

To date, a total of 43,726 applications have been approved and passed onto Social Security Board (SSB) for payment. Of this total, 42% are for persons who were recently laid off from their jobs, 25% are for self-employed persons who lost their work and income, and 33% are for persons who applied as long-term unemployed. Applications will continue to be processed over the next several days, raising the total approved applications to about 50,000.

Economic Oversight Team provides update on Unemployment Relief Program

The Economic Oversight Team (EOT) has approved a total of 40,453 applications for unemployment relief, all of which have been sent to the Social Security Board (SSB) for payment. SSB has processed 37,696 payments to approved applicants. Of this, 34,915 approved applicants have been successfully paid by direct deposit or top-up card. In addition, 15,438 of those persons, who received their first payment before April 18, 2020, have now received their second payment. SSB continues to process payments and all remaining approved applications are expected to be processed by the end of May 6th.

Unemployment Relief Top-up Cards

Recipients of the Government of Belize COVID-19 unemployment relief, who are receiving payments by way of top-up cards, are advised to carefully protect their top-up cards and Personal Identification Numbers (PIN).

Closure of COVID-19 Unemployment Relief Program Online Portal

The Economic Oversight Team informs the public that the online portal for the Unemployment Relief Program has been closed to new applications. The portal opened to receive applications on April 3, 2020 and up to the time of closure at 4:00 p.m. today, April 24th, a total of 81,007 applications were received.

Update on Unemployment Relief Program

As of  April 20, 2020, a total of 72,213 applications have been submitted since the Unemployment Relief Program was opened to accept applications on April 3, 2020. This includes some of the applications submitted via hard copy, which have begun to be entered into the online portal. So far, 32,916 applications have been approved for payment to applicants. These include 7,106 that were approved on April 20th and have been forwarded to the Social Security Board (SSB) for processing.
