Bowen & Bowen Spelling Bee Kicks Off, Young spellers across Belize get ready to participate

There is a definite buzz in the air as spelling enthusiasts across the country look forward to the return of the annual Bowen & Bowen National Spelling Bee and its beloved mascot, A-Zee. Now in its twenty-sixth year, the Spelling Bee has seen thousands of participants who have benefitted from high school scholarships and education grants, and 2023 promises to be just as exciting and rewarding.

MoECST Continues Consultations on New Competency-based Curriculum

On January 12 and 13, 2023, a delegation of education stakeholders, led by Dr. Hon. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST), visited primary school teachers and principals of the Corozal District to continue consultations on the new national competency-based curriculum.

MoECST Receives Donation of Laptops and Chromebooks from Build Belize Inc.

On December 16, 2022, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) received a donation of 79 laptops and Chromebooks from Build Belize Inc.

MoECST Signs MOU with FFB and BBF

The MoECST, through the signing of these memorandums, has committed to supporting student-athletes by providing education stipends to assist with living and tuition expenses. The FFB identified 10 student-athletes studying abroad to receive a BZ$600 monthly stipend to assist with living expenses, and 39 student-athletes have been identified by the BBF to receive a tuition scholarship up to the baccalaureate level.

The BTB Awards Journalist with a full scholarship for an International Broadcast Media Training Program

On August 24, 2022, the Belize Tourism Board launched an innovative scholarship program to support the local broadcast media sector in Belize and elevate their technical and professional skills in the art of broadcast media and journalism. After the completion of the period for receipt of applications, a vetting exercise was carried out and today the Belize Tourism Board awarded Mr. Luis Wade Jr. as the first recipient of this new scholarship program.

Plan for Schools: Hurricane Lisa Response Efforts

In collaboration with both the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) and the general managers of those schools severely affected, it has been determined that classes will resume, as previously indicated, on Monday, November 7 for all schools, including those in the Belize District that are able to return safely. For other Belize District schools that have been impacted, the week of November 7 to 12 will serve as a transition week in preparation for a full return by November 14 except, of course, in extreme cases.

Belizean team wins gold at international First Global Challenge Robotics competition

A talented robotic team from the Belize High School (BHS) is on their way home after conquering the First Global Challenge Robotics competition in Geneva, Switzerland. The Belizean group from Belize City claimed gold, making history after becoming the first-ever team from the region to win such a competition.

NASA and Belize Partner to Bring STEM-Based Program to Belizean Schools

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Leyla Moses-Ones, on behalf of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Minister of Belize’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology Hon. Francis Fonseca signed an agreement to implement a Belize-based program that supports educational activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program is an international science and education program that provides students and the public worldwide with the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment.
