The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), in collaboration with Projects Abroad and the Department of Youth Services, is currently hosting its second annual, four-week summer sports camp. On Monday, July 17th, more than 20 youngsters kicked off camp with beach soccer activities at the Honorable Louis Slyvestre Sporting Complex (Saca Chispas).
With three full weeks left, SPTC Councilor of Sports, Hector Alamilla, is still encouraging parents to register children aged five to 12 years old to join in their upcoming sporting activities. Since the camp is sponsored by the SPTC, Alamilla states that children do not need to bring along any equipment, and that water is provided.
The remaining camp schedule is as follows:
Monday, July 24th to Friday, July 28th—softball at Saca Chispas
Monday, July 31st to Friday, August 4th—basketball at San Pedro High School or Boca Del Rio Park. Monday, August 7th to Friday, August 11th—martial arts at Belize Fitness on Coconut Drive at 9AM to 11AM. Those wanting to swim can meet in front of Mayan Princess on Barrier Reef Drive from 2PM to 4PM.
According to Alamilla, children need to be active in sports for more than just health reasons. “This is an opportunity for them to build confidence and character. They need to learn the ability to interact and socialize with other children. I am eager to have a good turnout, and to know that children have activities to do during the summer instead of staying home and not being active all day,” he said.
To culminate the camp and celebrate International Youth Day, a movie night is also scheduled for Friday, August 11th. If you are interested in sending your child/children to camp, you can register them at either the Projects Abroad Office or with Kent ‘Bob’ Gabourel at the San Pedro Town Council on Barrier Reef Drive.
