To raise funds to purchase school supplies and help primary school students in San Pedro Town, a 5k Run dubbed ‘Conquer COVID-19,’ was held on Saturday, July 11th. The sporting event, spearheaded by Kent ‘Bob’ Gabourel, Sports Coordinator at the San Pedro Town Council, saw a large number of participants gladly answering the call to support the worthy cause.
Many families on the island continue to struggle with the effects of COVID-19, which has left many without jobs. As the new school year approaches, getting much-needed school supplies will be challenging for those in dire economic situations. Gabourel indicated that all proceeds from the event’s registration fee will go to assist those in need.
The run began shortly after 6AM from the Central Park, heading out to Pescador Drive, south to Banana Beach Resort and back to the starting point. Participants included persons of all ages, but the majority included members of CrossFit boxes, marathoners, government and non-governmental organizations, students, and some children who accompanied their parents, among others.
The first runner to make it back to the Central Park was Brandon Adolphus, clocking a time of 16 minutes. He traveled from Orange Walk Town to participate in the 5k run. Eric Donis and Ian ‘Lion’ Gordon came shortly after Adolphus. The rest of the runners slowly began arriving at Central Park.
Afterward, prizes and certificates were presented to the top finishers. Prizes ranged from cases of Powerade to gift certificates.
Gabourel and his team of organizers thanked everyone that participated and made the event a success. He extends an invitation to participants to take part in similar future events in the future.
