On Tuesday, October 29th, the Government of Belize (GOB) and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the North Ambergris Caye Water and Wastewater Project. This MOU secures $2 million in project preparation funding for sustainable water and wastewater solutions. The project aims to manage low-carbon, climate-resilient, non-potable, and potable water resources for North Ambergris Caye, marking a crucial step towards enhancing the resilience of new communities.

Department of Environment now in San Pedro for six months
Since its establishment on June 21 this year, the Department of Environment (DOE) in Ambergris Caye has proactively addressed environmental concerns. The DOE staff actively engages in various activities and plans to continue efforts to oversee the Cayes' environmental demands. DOE operates independently to uphold the Environmental Protection Act, which grants broad regulatory and enforcement authority for preventing and controlling environmental pollution and conserving and managing natural resources.

An information session on a World Bank project, crucial for the future of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, was held on Monday, May 20th, at the San Pedro Lions Den. The 'Blue Cities and Beyond' Project aims to enhance access to the island's climate-resilient and sustainable water and sanitation services. The presenters also outlined that the project will bolster the island's and country's management capacity for sustainable development of the blue economy.

SPTC plans to expand wastewater services north of San Pedro Town
Access to proper water and wastewater services is crucial to the residents of Ambergris Caye. The administration in charge, led by Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, is committed to expanding and improving these services in the northern part of the island in collaboration with various partners, including Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL), the Ministry of Economic Development (DOE), the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, the Belize Department of Environment, the Belize Forest Department, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the National Hydrological Service, and the Ministry of Economic Development, Belize.

For the past weeks, the water company has been working along the San Pedrito Highway, installing the necessary pipe system to better service the San Pedrito community as this subdivision grows.

The topic of adequate water services and a connection to a proper wastewater system in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, is a task every administration on the island has tried to tackle with help from experts in this area. The current administration, headed by Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, is working to establish a new water plant in northern Ambergris Caye and upgrade the present facilities (south water plants and wastewater system) to make them climate resilient and sustainable.
