SPTC reiterates that proper garbage disposal is everyone’s business
The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is aggressively addressing the ongoing issue of improper garbage disposal across the island. Despite several calls for residents to help clean up the island, the issue persists at an alarming rate. As a result, the SPTC is now taking a proactive approach to solving the problem. Anyone caught violating the law regarding littering and improper garbage disposal will be liable to pay a minimum fine of five hundred dollars.

Department of Environment trains SPTC staff to issue improper garbage disposal tickets
On Tuesday, September 17th, the Belize Department of Environment (DOE) organized a training session from 9AM to 12:30PM in Ambergris Caye. The session, hosted by environmental officer Mr. Kendrick Gordon, was to educate council members, traffic managers, and head traffic wardens about a new ticketing initiative. This initiative involves issuing litter tickets to individuals improperly disposing of waste or contributing to environmental pollution, starting with random inspections on the island. Those failing to adhere to the regulations will be subject to ticketing and fines based on the severity of the offense.

SPTC holds Autism Awareness Walk/Run
On Friday, April 19th, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) organized an autism walk/run starting at Central Park to raise awareness, understanding, and support for children on the autism spectrum. The event began at 6AM, and by 9AM, the winners had completed the run. The event was a collaborative effort between Councilor Johnnia Duarte, Councilor Marina Kay, and Mayor Wally Nunez, with the support of the University of Belize's Environmental Club to coincide with Autism Awareness Month.

San Pedro observes Earth Hour 2024
San Pedro Town joined millions worldwide in celebrating and supporting the planet by observing Earth Hour 2024 on Saturday, March 23rd. The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) hosted the annual activity at Flamboyant Park in the San Pablo subdivision. Several families and their children were invited to an evening filled with fun and educational activities, including a movie and a bonfire, to highlight the importance of protecting Mother Earth.

To continue advocating for a safer planet and teaching the young generations the importance of being responsible citizens, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) hosted the annual Earth Hour on Saturday, March 25th. The Honourable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex event involved an educational film, a bonfire, and an Earth Hour-theme competition.

Efforts underway to tackle plastic on the island; SPTC starts recycling campaign
The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is embarking on a recycling project to rid the town of plastic bottles. The project is being led by Councilor Johnnia Duarte, whose portfolio includes Environment and Climate Change, and will see bottle-collecting stations in the shape of sea creatures. The first of these, a sea star, is at the central park, where everyone is encouraged to drop their plastic bottles in it.

San Pedro starts Township week promoting zero tolerance for the use of plastic and styrofoam
On Wednesday, November 23rd, Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez and Mayor Gualberto 'Wally' Nuñez and his team promoted using biodegradable products, such as groceries bags, at a presentation at the San Pedro Lions Den. The enforcement will see reusable bags available at the different establishments for around 50 cents. The populace and business sector are encouraged to make this their standard practice to avoid using plastic items and give back to the island town community, which turns 38 on Sunday, November 27th. The demonstration emphasized how hazardous plastic can be for fragile marine ecosystems like those around the island, thus, the importance of getting everyone on this campaign.
