As Vice President of SIDS DOCK Assembly, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. John Briceño will tackle the sargassum issue
Belize’s Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. John Briceño, is the new Vice President of the SIDS DOCK, a Small Island Development States initiative for sustainable development. Briceño’s appointment to represent the Caribbean region was determined by acclamation and occurred during the seventh session of the SIDS DOCK Assembly held virtually on Monday, September 25th. It was held within the margins of the General Debate of the 78th United Nations General Assembly session at its headquarters in New York City, New York, USA. Briceño will start his term in January 2024. During the event, he spoke about a $50USD million initiative to mitigate against the sargassum seaweed invasion affecting Caribbean economies.

Government to establish police booths on the island; San Pedro is a safe destination for visitors
Following the violent weekend in San Pedro Town, where a tourist lost her life, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Tourism, plans to add two police booths on the island to enhance policing efforts. Tourists on the island and future travellers are assured that Ambergris Caye is a safe place to visit.

Military exercise Tradewinds 2022 officially begins in Belize
Belize is currently co-hosting the multi-national military exercise Tradewinds 2022 with Mexico from May 7th to the 21st. The training, sponsored by the United States Southern Command (US SOUTHCOM), focuses on the interoperability between security forces and partner agencies to counter transnational crimes. It also serves to promote security and stability against threats and natural disasters. The countries participating this year include Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominica, Dominican Republic, France, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, St Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America, Mexico, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to visit Belize on Saturday
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has embarked on a five-day tour of several Central American countries and Cuba. He started his official trip to Guatemala on Thursday, May 5th, and will then visit El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, and Cuba. The main topics to be discussed include assistance in development and trade and exploring ways to alleviate migration pressure from the said region.
