“Hey, Juan. How are you doing?”
“Not so good right now, Mr. Dennis,” Juan said, as he took a seat at the table.
I was seated at the picnic table in front of my favorite local restaurant waiting for my dinner. I had watched Juan came up the road from his house dragging a big suitcase.
“You’re not doing well?” I asked. “Are you sick?”
“No. I’m not sick. It’s just that. . . .”
Suddenly a golf cart came flying up, skidded to a stop and Juan’s mother-in-law got out of it.
“Juan! Juan!” she said. “Maria called and said you two were having problems.”
“Problems, Suegra? This is more than just problems. I packed up my things and I’m leaving.” “Why? What happened?” the mother-in-law asked.
“Yesterday I took some tourists for a three-day fishing and diving trip down south. One of the guests got very sick so we had to cut the trip off after one day. I texted Maria and told her I was coming home early. I got home and she was there with a naked man in my bed. I packed up and left for good.”
“That does not sound like something my Maria would do,” the mother-in-law said. “You wait here and I’ll go talk to her and find out what happened. There has to be a very good reason why something like this would happen.”
She left and returned after about ten minutes.
“I knew there was a really good explanation,” she said.
“This I got to hear,” Juan said. “What is her reason?”
The mother-in-law said, “She didn’t get your text.”
