SPTC Traffic Department to use breathalyzer tests

The San Pedro Traffic Department plans to enforce Chapter 230, sections 74-80, with legal stipulations for drivers under the influence of alcohol. With a breathalyzer, traffic wardens can detect if a driver is intoxicated. The enforcement of these regulations comes after an increase in traffic incidents involving drunk driving.

San Pedro Sun reporter Dion Vansen invited to attend Investigative Journalism Fellowship in Jamaica

From Monday, April 21st through the 25th, the Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC) hosted an Investigative Journalism training in Kingston, Jamaica, with 23 journalists from across the region. Belize was represented by The San Pedro Sun’s Senior Reporter Dion Vansen, along with colleagues Hipolito Novelo and Marion Ali from News 5 Live. The intense fellowship touched on areas like professional development, interview techniques, data journalism and using visualization tools, organizing story ideas, storyboarding, and exercises, among other essential activities. The workshop ended with the distribution of certificates.

Community health outreach brings free screening services to island residents

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is teaming up with health workers from the Central Health Region to bring the convenience of free basic health screenings to your doorstep. These screenings, which include glucose, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and malaria tests, are designed to help determine your overall health status. Those interested in taking advantage of this service can contact phone numbers 628-5232 or 6278868 to arrange a visit to your location. The service is available on Thursdays and Fridays from 7:30AM to 10:30AM.

San Pedro High School athletes win 15 Golds at northern regionals

San Pedro High School athletes won 15 Golds and 11 Silver Medals at the Northern Secondary Schools Sports Association athletics regional championships hosted by Muffles College in Orange Walk Town on Saturday, April 20th. The athletes will represent the Northern zone at the upcoming National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) championships hosted by Anglican Cathedral College at the Marion Jones Stadium on Friday and Saturday, April 26-27th.

Belize’s Scarlet Macaws population in peril

The Frіеndѕ fоr Соnѕеrvаtіоn аnd Dеvеlорmеnt (FСD) are alerting Belizeans that the local population of Scarlet Macaws is іn іmmеdіаtе реrіl. The organization that looks after the Chiquibul National Park in western Belize released an official note on April 23rd explaining the current situation and citing that around 2008, approximately 125 pairs of macaws remained in that area.

Street rehabilitation and paving reaches San Mateo

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has been working hard over the past few months to improve the streets and roads across the island. One of the areas that they are currently focusing on is San Juan, where they have paved and rehabilitated the streets to get rid of rocky and bumpy roads. The work in the San Juan area is almost complete and finished this week. After that, the rehabilitation and paving of roads will commence in the San Mateo area.
