Strict restrictions on the sale of alcohol during Good Friday and Easter weekend

As the Easter holiday draws near, starting this Good Friday, April 15th, the Belize Police Department has issued a set of regulations focusing on the sale of alcohol during this festive time. The rules address the different types of liquor license holders and other restrictions applying to businesses and individuals. The public is reminded to observe a 'dry' Good Friday (no sale of alcoholic beverages), as this is the religious aspect of Easter.

Pre-approved passenger fares for water taxis have been released by the Belize Port Authority, who states it has not approved an increase.

Government to discontinue 10% salary cut for public officers

Public officers across the country are welcoming the news from the government that they will be receiving back the 10% of their salaries that had been taken away from them by the new administration in the new fiscal year. When the current government headed by Prime Minister John Briceno took office in 2020, they found it necessary to apply the salary cut to help build back the national economy devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although public officers rejected the pay cut, they endured the salary reduction for months. According to PM Briceno, as of July 1st, all public servants will receive their full wage. 

BTB offers stakeholders the opportunity to become tour operators

The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) is offering tour guides, tour guide associations, micro and small-medium enterprises the opportunity to become a tour operator. The program will provide first-time tour operators applicants a grant of up to $1,000 to cover expenses of the public liability insurance, a document needed to become a tour operator.

Lobster Season closes February 28th

Lovers of the Caribbean Spiny Lobster and fishermen are reminded that the season will end on February 28th. In the past, the lobster season used to end on February 15th and re-open every 14th of June. This year, the re-opening of the season is extended to June 30th.

BTB hosts session on Matching Grant Program in San Pedro Town

A media and stakeholders' session regarding the Matching Grant Program (MGP) spearheaded by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) took place in San Pedro Town on Wednesday, February 16th. Held at the San Pedro Town Council conference room, the session explained the program's application process and addressed questions by those in attendance. The MGP aims to assist with much-needed financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic.

No increase in electricity rates expected until June

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has decided to keep the current Mean Electricity Rate of $0.39.9 per kilowatt-hour instead of the proposed increase of $0.41.5 per kilowatt-hour. The current rate will remain until June 30, 2022.
