San Pedro Town Christmas Tree lighting ushers in the holidays
Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019
San Pedro Town welcomed the Christmas Season with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on Sunday, December 1st. Held at the Central Park and organized by The San Pedro Town Council, the event included messages from local authorities, performances from different schools on the island, and a special appearance by the Pandemonium Steel Band from Belize City.
Miss San Pedro Litzy Castillo Guillen opened the event by welcoming everyone gathered at the park. An invocation followed by Pastor Clive Welsh, with Mayor Daniel Guerrero delivering a few remarks. “This is a joyful time for all of us to come together and celebrate this special occasion of the year,” Guerrero said. “Christmas is a time to forgive and live in peace with each other.” Guerrero mentioned that people should also take this opportunity to get closer to God as the season’s occasion is about Jesus Christ, who is believed to have been born during this time over two thousand years ago. Before wrapping up his speech, he gave the signal for the tree to be set aglow with thousands of colorful lights.
Area Representative and Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Honourable Manuel Heredia Jr, joined Guerrero in wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. He pointed out how united and loving San Pedro is with visitors and new residents. Heredia said the Christmas spirit of peace and harmony is a blessing that every person on the island and across the country should embrace for the well-being of the nation.
Councillor Hector ‘Tito’ Alamilla gave the vote of thanks and acknowledged everyone present at the event. He thanked all the performers participating and offered special thanks to Lady Dixie Bowen, who always donates the Christmas tree. Afterward, everyone was treated to refreshments and invited to stay and enjoy the entertainment. Students from several different schools on the island delighted the audience with a Christmas musical presentation. Closing the festivities was the Pandemonium Steel Band, performing harmonious instrumental notes.
The Christmas tree will remain at the Central Park for the entire month of December. Everyone is encouraged to come out to the park to enjoy the view. It’s a great photo opportunity and a wonderful symbol of peace and love during the festive season.
