Workshop for men and boys promotes behavioral changes to prevent gender-based violence

On December 7th, the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs organized a men's and boys' workshop on behavioral change in collaboration with the Family Support and Gender Affairs Department. The event primarily targeted high school-age boys and took place in the San Pedro High School conference room as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Participants learned about the concept of toxic masculinity and discussed the importance of promoting gender equality, with a strong emphasis on the need to end violence against women and girls.

“Problem” croc in San Pablo captured and relocated

On December 6th, a crocodile was captured in the San Pablo Area, San Pedro Town. It is estimated to be over 10 feet long and weigh around 1,500 pounds. The crocodile was caught after it snatched a roaming dog in the area. This incident raised concerns among residents about their safety and the safety of their pets.

Legality of gates restricting access to public areas

The legality of installing gates on beaches in San Pedro Town is a contentious issue stemming from longstanding regulations regarding public access to coastal areas. According to Belizean law, specifically the 66-foot rule known as "Queen's Land," all land up to 66 feet from the high-water mark is considered public property. This law mandates that beachfront and docks must remain accessible to the public, prohibiting any permanent barriers that would restrict access.

Electricity service upgrade: San Pedro Gas Turbine is finally online

After several months of delays, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has confirmed that the San Pedro Gas Turbine is now operational. This upgrade to the energy infrastructure is expected to supply the island with 21 megawatts of power. The introduction of the gas turbine became necessary because the current submarine cable, which connects to the national grid, was unable to meet the peak power demand, which is limited to 17 megawatts.

San Pedro Lions Club raises over $4K for DFC fire victims

To continue assisting families in the DFC area who lost everything in a fire on November 19th, the San Pedro Lions Club donated over $4,000 to the victims on Wednesday, December 4th. These funds were raised during a barbecue sale and dollar drive held on November 27th at their Den on Barrier Reef Drive.
