Laptops contributed to the Mandarin program in San Pedro; students sit Mandarin test

Members of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize donated six laptops to the San Pedro Town Council for the Mandarin program. On Friday, August 12th, a ceremony was held in San Pedro Town with Dr. Cindy Hsueh, Executive Officer of Feng Chia University from Taiwan, Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, and Councilor Marina Kay. The event also saw the participation of a group of students who, in 2021, completed a six-month Mandarin course.

GOB Receives Second Disbursement of the 2022 Bilateral Cooperation Grant

On August 3, 2022, Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, received a grant from H. E. David Kuan-Chou Chien, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), in the amount of US$950,000. This represents the second disbursement under the 2022 Bilateral Cooperation Program between Belize and Taiwan.

Mandarin Workshop to be held in San Pedro

A Mandarin workshop is planned for Friday, August 12th, in San Pedro Town. The event, aimed at those students who completed the past mandarin program, was announced by the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize, stating that it was organized by the efforts of Councilor Marina Kay of the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) and the Executive Officer of the Taiwanese institution Feng Chia University, Dr. Cindy Hsueh. The announcement also indicated that to enhance teaching and learning for students on the island, laptops will be handed over to the SPTC.

Code Caribbean: Promoting STEAM for Innovation in the Caribbean

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has announced that Belize and Barbados have been chosen for the pilot project of ‘Code Caribbean: Promoting STEAM for Innovation in the Caribbean.’ Belize was selected from among the 7 Caribbean countries of Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Suriname, Guyana, and the Bahamas that are part of the regional initiative. This will be implemented in collaboration with The Trust for the Americas, Code.org, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Ministries of Education of Belize and Barbados.

MoECST Launches the National Curriculum Framework

Over the past eight months, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) has been collaborating with education stakeholders to develop the National Curriculum Framework that will guide our transition to competency-based education in Belize. The framework was officially launched July 28, 2022.

Islanders and organizations commend GOB for increasing the age of compulsory education

A decision by the Government of Belize to increase the mandatory age for school enrollment from ages 14 to 16 has been well received among Belizeans and organizations countrywide. The government said that it is a step in the right direction in preparing young Belizeans for life.

Belize Police Department signs MOA with San Pedro Junior College to provide officers with scholarships

The Belize Police Department and the San Pedro Junior College (SPJC) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to provide scholarship opportunities to police officers assigned to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye who are interested in obtaining an Associate Degree. The scholarship offers a 50% discount on tuition. According to the agreement, the number of police officers benefitting from this MOA should exceed five at any given cohort.

United States Donates Back-to-School Supplies to Rural Communities

The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Humanitarian Assistance Program is ensuring Belizean children in select rural communities are equipped with must-have back-to- school items so they are successfully poised to return to the classroom in the upcoming academic year. On June 15th, U.S. Embassy officials delivered 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to students at the Carmelita and Santa Martha Government Schools in the Orange Walk District.
