Caribbean Demography Experts Convene in Belize for Regional Workshop on Population Estimates and Projections
Forty-four participants from 14 Caribbean countries, including Belize, actively engaged in a four-day regional workshop on population estimates and projections held from 18–21 August 2025 in Belize City. Organized by the United Nations Population Fund Sub-regional Office for the Caribbean (UNFPA SROC) and the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Center (ECLAC-CELADE), the training brought together demography practitioners and technicians from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) and other National Statistical Offices (NSOs) across the Caribbean region to strengthen their skills in producing accurate and policy-relevant population projections.

Cabinet Brief for August 28, 2025
Cabinet, at its meeting on August 26th, supported a proposal for the Social Security Board to gain direct access to the Central Bank’s payment system to reduce high bank charges. It also noted the U.S. decision to suspend duty-free exemptions for low-value shipments, leading the Belize Postal Service to suspend certain packages to the U.S. effective August 27th. Updates were provided on Belize’s role in the ICJ climate change opinion, progress on the Green Belize reforestation project, rural electrification plans, and the launch of September Celebrations under the theme “Belize @44: Stronger Together, Rising Forever.

Belize Launches National Soil Doctor Training Program to Strengthen Soil Conservation and Management
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through its Global Soil Partnership, has officially launched the Soil Doctor Training Program in Belize. This initiative aims to strengthen national capacity in soil conservation, sustainable land management, and farmer-to-farmer extension services.

The Ministry of Economic Transformation (MET) and the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support, and Gender Affairs, with support from the National AIDS Commission (NAC), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide nutritional support to People Living with HIV (PLHIV) across Belize.

Government Says MCC Grant Restored but Will Be Modified
On Wednesday, August 20th, the Government of Belize (GOB) announced that the country may still access the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant, despite the program being shut down in April of this year. Belize’s foreign service lobbied strongly for its reinstatement, and the effort succeeded. However, officials confirmed the agreement has been modified, and it remains uncertain whether Belize will receive the full US$125 million approved initially.

New Chargé d’Affaires Appointed to the U.S. Embassy in Belize
The Embassy of the United States of America in Belize is undergoing a leadership transition following the departure of Chargé d’Affaires David Hodge. As of Monday, August 11th, Deputy Chief of Mission Rhonda Slusher has assumed temporary charge until the new Chargé d’Affaires, Katharine Beamer, on August 23, 2025.
