Global Handwashing Day 2022 is being celebrated today under the theme, “Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene.” This annual event, which is commemorated in partnership with UNICEF and the Water Sanitation and Hygiene Multi-Sectoral Body, is a global call to action to raise awareness of handwashing.

Health officials warn about an increase in dengue cases and gastrointestinal infections
Following the torrential rains caused by weather disturbances such as Hurricane Julia, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) issued warnings about possible infectious diseases, chemical hazards, and injuries. The public is urged to avoid working or playing in floodwaters. According to health sources in San Pedro Town, an increase in Dengue cases and gastroenteritis infections have been reported in the Belize District.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness (MoHW), through its Communications Unit and in collaboration with PAHO and other partners, announces the launch of the ministry’s official website, health.gov.bz. In keeping in line with Belize’s National Digital Agenda to transform government services through the integration of technology, the ministry has been working hard to develop a modern, interactive and user-friendly website.

Tragic death of beloved islander has San Pedranos demanding better health services
The sudden death of islander Alexander Morris shocked his friends and relatives in the early hours of Monday, October 10th. Morris suffered a terrible accident and needed to be airlifted to Belize City for emergency medical attention. However, due to inclement weather, the transfer was delayed. Morris's condition deteriorated, and he passed away, waiting for emergency care. Family and friends were devastated and now call on respective authorities to better equip the island's medical center to avoid these tragedies.

In July 2020, the European Union (EU) reallocated 500,000 Euros from the existing “Health Sector Support Programme Project (HSSP),” to be put towards the preparation and response to COVID-19. Through this reallocation, the EU and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) donated two medical waste autoclaves (valued at over BZD$400,000) to the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW). This action is linked to the Health Sector Programme for Belize financed by the EU with more than 10 million USD implemented by its partner PAHO/WHO.

While the World Health Organization signaled the possible end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the public is advised to continue taking the necessary precautions as the virus persists. In San Pedro Town, vaccines against the virus that has killed over six million people worldwide are still available at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II on Fridays from 8AM to 2PM.

U.S. Military and Belizean Surgeons Partner to Provide Surgical Care to Belizean Communities
United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Joint Task Force-Bravo (JTF-Bravo) concluded a two-week Global Health Engagement mission in Belize. The U.S. military team performed surgeries in Dangriga and Belmopan from August 15-26, collaborating with Belizean counterparts to improve medical readiness and promote wellness in local communities.
