MoHW Cautions Public on Recall for Jif Peanut Butter Products
On May 20, 2022, the J.M. Smucker Company voluntarily recalled select Jif peanut butter products due to potential Salmonella contamination. The Ministry of Health & Wellness has commenced a thorough investigation at major supermarkets countrywide as a precautionary action as Belize imports the products in question. Where these products are identified, they will be seized, condemned and destroyed.

While the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) is currently monitoring the spread of monkeypox in other countries. Several cases have been reported in Europe and the United States of America. According to the staff at MOHW, monkeypox could reach Belize because international travel has increased in the country.

COVID-19: Pfizer Vaccines for children ages 5-11 now available in San Pedro
The COVID-19 vaccination campaign continues, and starting Thursday, May 26th, children ages 5-11 in San Pedro Town will begin receiving their first dose. Health personnel will begin visiting schools to administer the vaccine on Thursday at New Horizon Seventh Day Adventist primary school and Friday at Ambergris Caye Elementary School.

U.S. Military Brings Medical Care to Hundreds in the Orange Walk District
On Thursday, May 19, 2022, the United States Southern Command Joint Task Force – Bravo (JTF-Bravo) medical team and the Tradewinds 2022 medical team concluded a three-day medical outreach in the Orange Walk District. The team of U.S. medical professionals partnered with local non- governmental organizations to provide preventative medicine courses, pediatrics, optometry, and dental services to over 879 residents in the Carmelita and Santa Marta villages on May 17 - 19.

Positive cases of COVID-19 on the rise; MOWH confirms another wave and new variant
There is a growing concern among residents of San Pedro Town as the number of COVID-19 infections is on the rise. On Thursday, May 19th, the latest report shows 117 new confirmed cases with only 27 recoveries. The total countrywide is now 709 active cases and counting. According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), this infection surge is due to the COVID-19 variant called Omicron BA.2, a sub-variant of the original Omicron strain.

MOHW urges people to get second COVID-19 booster: no more Pfizer doses after May
It will be almost a month since the government lifted COVID-19 restrictions within Belize. Despite the move, the vaccination campaign to immunize as many people as possible continues. With the virus still a public health concern worldwide, on Thursday, April 28th, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) sent out a message encouraging people to obtain their second COVID-19 booster against the disease that remains a threat to the most vulnerable. The ministry also announced that doses of the Pfizer vaccines will no longer be available at the vaccination sites after May.
