Prime Minister Nominates New Attorney General

Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño has nominated Mr. Anthony Sylvestre to be appointed as Belize’s new Attorney General. Mr. Sylvestre will assume his new post on July 1, 2023.

New Justices of the Peace sworn in on Ambergris Caye

San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye has a new group of Justices of the Peace (JP) after being sworn in on Wednesday, November 9th, at the Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club. The swearing-in ceremony, which also saw a few members named Senior JPs, was conducted by Belize’s Attorney General (AG) Magali Marin-Young SC.

The Judiciary in Belize supported to address Gender Based Violence from the UNDP through the EU funded Spotlight Initiative

The Chief Justice, Madam Michelle Arana received equipment to improve the case management of the Judiciary particularly relating to gender-based violence and family matters from the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP.

Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño hosts Cabinet Breifing

The Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, met remotely in regular session on Tuesday, December 1st, 2020. • Cabinet decided to launch a full investigation into the “sell-off” of government assets by the previous administration. The inquiry will include representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Attorney General’s Ministry, the Ministry of the Public Service and representatives from the Public Service Union and the private sector. • In accordance with its commitment to full transparency, Cabinet decided to authorize a forensic audit of Belize Infrastructure Limited, including all projects it administered.

Governor-General Leads Delegation to Taiwan

While at the Presidential Palace, the Governor-General and President Tsai witnessed the signing of a bilateral agreement by Belize’s Attorney General Hon. Michael Peyrefitte and Taiwan’s Justice Minister Hon. Tsai Ching-Hsiang that would see the two countries cooperate on addressing matters of anti-corruption.

Lawmakers talk Sound Policy for Better Law

Belizean law enforcement officials from all branches of government discussed “Sound Policy for Better Law” at a law-making forum hosted by the Attorney General’s Ministry, in collaboration with the Impact Justice Project of Canada, at the Best Western Biltmore Plaza Hotel in Belize City on Thursday and Friday, April 19th and 20th.

International report marks Belize as major drug trafficking and money laundering country

The 294-page annual report outlines the efforts of key countries in their battle against the international drug trade during 2017 and gives Belize a bad score, stating that the country’s drug control efforts are hampered by corruption, insufficient investigative capacity, an ineffective judicial sector and a lack of political will.
