San Pedro proudly hosts the Special Olympics Torch

The Special Olympics Belize Torch was hosted in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, by the island’s police formation after arriving from Belize City on Tuesday, December 3rd. Each year, the torch is brought to San Pedro as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR). This event takes place in anticipation of the Special Olympic Games, scheduled to begin on Friday, December 6th, at the Marion Jones Stadium in Belize City. The mission of the LETR is to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement.

San Pedro’s Police officer recorded using excessive force during an arrest

On Saturday, July 6th, San Pedro's Police Officer Devon Makin, who is part of the Special Patrol Unit (SPU) in Ambergris Caye, was recorded on camera violently attacking a male island resident. The resident was aggressively detained and asked to kneel while being hit on the leg and forehead with a firearm. This action was taken because the resident was suspected of being armed and believed to have intentions of committing unlawful acts.

Ministry of Home Affairs Procures Vehicles for Belize Police Department

The Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries procured eight double-cab 4x4 Isuzu D-Max vehicles as a component of a concerted effort to strengthen its security force fleet. The vehicles were handed over to the Belize Police Department.

San Pedro Police staying vigilant following State of Emergency declared on the mainland

Since March 26th, a state of emergency (SOE) has been implemented in some regions of southside Belize City, Hattieville Village, and Roaring Creek Village in the Cayo District. The motive behind this was to prevent any retaliation following three murders, one of which was a police officer. The police officers and Belize Defence Force soldiers have been targeting possible gang members in these areas. Therefore, many of them have fled to other parts of the country, including San Pedro Town. In the past week, the San Pedro Police Formation detained and removed several of these suspected gang members from the island.

Following a resounding re-election on March 6th, Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez and his six Councillors under the People’s United Party (PUP) said on Tuesday, March 12th, to be ready to continue working for the San Pedro community in their second term in office. Their manifesto is the blueprint for accomplishments and pledges in the next three years.

Islander dies in boating accident while working at sea

Eight San Pedro residents were involved in a boating accident on Wednesday afternoon, February 28th, prompting the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) to conduct a search and rescue operation between the Turneffe Atoll and English Caye. The operation managed to locate everyone; however, one of the islanders did not survive the ordeal. The deceased was identified as Sylvio Camara, a former teacher from San Pedro.
