Islander dies in boating accident while working at sea

Eight San Pedro residents were involved in a boating accident on Wednesday afternoon, February 28th, prompting the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) to conduct a search and rescue operation between the Turneffe Atoll and English Caye. The operation managed to locate everyone; however, one of the islanders did not survive the ordeal. The deceased was identified as Sylvio Camara, a former teacher from San Pedro.

Anke Doehm starts Cruelty to a Child trial in Belize City

The trial for the criminal case against Anke Doehm for the death of her adopted daughter Faye Lin Cannon started on Wednesday, February 21st, at the High Court in Belize City. Doehm faces a charge of Cruelty to a Child after Cannon was found dead in her bedroom on July 3, 2017, in their apartment north of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.

Over 900 illegal firearms destroyed by law enforcement officers

A record number of firearms were destroyed on Friday, January 19th, at the Police Training Academy in Belmopan City. The 900-plus illegal weapons were seized from across the country throughout the past years. The Firearm Destruction Initiative is a collaborative project between Belize's law enforcement agents, the Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS), the Mine Advisory Group (MAG), and the British High Commission.

Belize ends 2023 with the lowest murder rate in years

While the last weekend of 2023 resulted in two additional deaths related to gun violence, one considered a possible act of self-defense, the total murder count for the year was 85, the lowest for Belize since 2005, dropping Belize’s murder rate per 100,000 residents to 19.1. The reduction in violent crime is considered very positive for the country’s public safety efforts, as the murder rate in recent years has been over 100 per year.

Island police officer recognized as Officer of the Year for San Pedro

Woman Police Constable (WPC) Kristy Novelo was recently selected as officer of the year for the San Pedro Police Formation. The island-based police officer was recognized for outstanding performance, arrests, conduct, and good work ethic.

Prime Minister hands over Mortuary Transport Vehicles to Ministry of Home Affairs

On November 21, Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño handed over two mortuary transport vehicles to the Ministry of Home Affairs & New Growth Industries. Hon. Kareem Musa received the donation, valuing BZ$490,000.00, on behalf of his ministry.
