A group of truck company representatives in San Pedro Town has retained legal counsel following new restrictions imposed by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC). The restrictions prohibit large and container trucks from traversing the downtown area. The restriction, publicly announced by the SPTC on April 30th, is being challenged as unlawful, arbitrary, and unconstitutional in a letter issued by Belize City-based law firm Elrington and Company.

Deadline for restricting large trucks in downtown San Pedro approaching

At the end of April, large trucks and container vehicles will be restricted from passing through downtown San Pedro. Residents are looking forward to this change, as it is expected to reduce traffic congestion and enhance safety for pedestrians and students in the town's core area.

Cabinet to discuss policy to restrict large trucks in downtown San Pedro

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) continues working on a solution restricting the use of large sand/dump/delivery trucks in the downtown area. Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez said the Ministry of Transport has discussed this matter, and his team has recommended that these large vehicles be either barged or downsized. As a result, the Ministry of Transport is reportedly preparing a paper to submit to the Cabinet with recommendations from the SPTC.

On Thursday, March 21st, the San Pedro Traffic Department participated in a training program to improve their knowledge of traffic laws, safety, and law enforcement. The training was organized in line with the Department of Transport's mission to develop, promote, and regulate a modern and efficient transportation sector through effective traffic management, human resource development, and community participation, focusing on public safety.

While the San Pedro Traffic Department works daily to control, route, and regulate traffic flow, they call on drivers to be responsible and follow proper driving laws.

GOB releases new standards for public transportation

The current administration came into power in November 2020. As soon as the new Government of Belize (GOB) settled down, the different ministries started working on their plans. One of those government branches is the Ministry of Transport. With the Honourable Rodwell Ferguson, one of their aims was to modernize public transportation in the country. The ministry worked on the requirements, and after almost three years, the standards to fully update the country's public transit were released on Thursday, February 16th.
