Government and IDB Focus on Employability Opportunities in Belize

The Government of Belize (GOB) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) held a meeting to discuss the IDB-funded study, entitled, “Skills to Shape the Future: Employability in Belize.”

Antonio Tepaz arrested and charged for the money missing at San Pedro Solid Waste Management Authority

Police reported on Friday, April 28th, that Antonio Lorenzo Tepaz, 26, was arrested and charged with the crime of Theft in relation to the $30,335 missing from the island’s Solid Waste Management Authority branch. The missing funds were discovered following an audit on the tipping fees collected at the San Pedro garbage transfer station from March 4, 2022, through February 15, 2023.

Taly Corporation acquires beach clean-up equipment to tackle Sargassum

The beaches of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, and others across the country experience a yearly heavy influx of the brown algae known as Sargassum. It is an inconvenience making the shoreline unattractive with the rotten seaweed threatening the local tourism industry and the environment. While stakeholders and the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) have made extraordinary efforts to keep the beaches free of seaweed, it has been quite a challenge. As such, Taly Corporation, a company doing business on the island, has acquired a heavy equipment/machine known as Surf Rake dedicated to cleaning up the island’s shores from debris and the main culprit, Sargassum.

Revocation of the Exclusive License to Administer the Government Lotteries

The Lotteries Committee met on April 20, to review the conditions of the exclusive license held by Brads Gaming Group Ltd. (BGGL) to administer the Government Lotteries. Upon its review, the committee decided to revoke the exclusive license held by BGGL due to material and substantial breaches of the conditions of the exclusive license, and the Lotteries Act and its regulations.

Over $30K missing from San Pedro Solid Waste Management Authority

The San Pedro Police formation is investigating a matter at the island’s Solid Waste Management Authority branch in which $30,335 is missing following an audit. The audit was on the tipping fees collected from customers at the San Pedro transfer station from March 4, 2022, to February 15, 2023.

BDF and Coast Guard Receive New Vehicles

Hon. Florencio Marin Jr., Minister of National Defence and Border Security, handed over two vehicles to the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and the Belize Coast Guard in a ceremony at the ministry’s compound on April 20. The acquisition of the vehicles, which will be for administrative use, is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to support both institutions in the areas of transportation and physical infrastructure, with the aim of ensuring the well-being of the men and women who serve in the military.

Island Academy girls and St. John Vianney boys win Belize District Basketball Championships

The Island Academy girls and St. John Vianney Roman Catholic School boys won the Belize District Primary Schools Basketball Championships organized by the National Sports Council at the Belize Civic Center on Tuesday, April 16.

U.S. Government Donates Generators and Medical Supplies to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital

U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) to observe hospital staff getting hands on instruction on recently U.S. donated oxygen generators. The three oxygen generators are valued at BZ $1,000,000 and funded through the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Humanitarian Assistance Program, coordinated by the U.S. Embassy Security Cooperation Office.
