Ministry of Health & Wellness Advises on Vector and Waterborne Diseases Due to Flooding

The Ministry of Health & Wellness advises that floodwaters can be the source of many infectious diseases, chemical hazards, and injuries, and therefore urges the public to avoid walking, working, or playing in floodwaters. Exposure to contaminated floodwater can cause wound infections, skin rashes, stomach illnesses, tetanus, and waterborne diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, leptospirosis, and hepatitis A.

Belize Port Authority to implement new fees; Tourism stakeholders concerned

San Pedro stakeholders are voicing concern over a new set of regulatory measures to be implemented by the Belize Port Authority (BPA). The measures include several new fees outlined in Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 114 of 2024. The SI, known as the Harbours and Merchant Shipping (Marina) Regulations, is part of the BPA’s broader initiative to standardize and regulate marinas, piers, and dock operations nationwide under a transparent framework.

Lobster Season Opens on July 1st

All fishers and the general public are advised that the highly anticipated season for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) will officially open on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. The Belize Fisheries Department (BFD) noted that this is in accordance with the Fisheries Act and its Subsidiary Regulations. The season will remain open until February 28, 2026.

Government’s Proposed Constitution Amendments Risk Infringing on Civil Rights

On May 26th, the Belize Constitution (Thirteenth Amendment) Bill, 2025 was introduced by Prime Minister John Briceño. The bill proposes significant changes aimed at enhancing the government’s ability to combat crime and maintain public safety amid rising gun violence and gang activity. The amendment seeks to clarify and expand the legal framework for declaring "special areas" where public safety and order can be prioritized, including the temporary limitation of certain rights to prevent, detect, or control crime. It also provides for the establishment of a Gun and Gang Court and validates previous proclamations of states of emergency and related regulations. However, the proposed amendments have drawn significant opposition.

Eco-Museum Hosts Pok ta Pok Festival

On Sunday, June 22nd, Eco-Museum Belize on northern Ambergris Caye came alive with color, culture, and community spirit as it hosted a lively festival and fundraiser in support of the K’iinich Ahau Belize Pok ta Pok team from Yo Creek, Orange Walk. The goal? To help them travel to the 6th Annual Pok Ta Pok Mundo Maya World Cup in Copán, Honduras.
