SPHS female team are back-to-back Northern Regional Basketball Champions

The San Pedro High School (SPHS) female basketball team emerged victorious at the National Secondary School Association (NSSA) Northern Regional Basketball competition on Saturday, November 30th in Orange Walk Town. The competition saw teams from seven different high schools trying to best each other for the top prize. At the end of the games, the winner in the male division was New Hope High School (NHHS), who joined SPHS’ girls in their journey towards the National Championship set for the 13th and 14th of December in Orange Walk Town.
The other participating schools included King’s College, Muffles College High School (MCHS), Corozal Community College (CCC), Ocean Academy and Orange Walk Technical College. During the one-day tournament, the SPHS girls took on King’s College in a match that saw the strength of the island team. The Kings College girls tried in several occasions to close the gap, but at the end of the four quarters they had been crushed by SPHS with a final game point of 48-22.
The championship match in the female division was between SPHS and MCHS. The team from MCHS was very confident after crushing CCC 50-0 and were determined to take the championship home. However, they were no match for the island girls. SPHS controlled the game easily, blowing out MCHS 43-16 at the end of the game.
In the male division, there was no team representing SPHS this year. The male team that succeeded and advanced to Nationals was NHHS, who overcame CCC at the end of the tournament. At the end, SPHS girls and NHHS boys were declared champions of NSSA Northern Regional Basketball competition.
The most outstanding players were then presented with their individual awards. SPHS’ Caroline Sersland was recognized for the Most Steals, while Normalee Gomez was awarded as the Most Valuable Player after scoring 25 points per game.
