San Pedro Town celebrates Garifuna Settlement Day
Despite the inclement weather, Garifuna Settlement Day was celebrated in San Pedro Town on Saturday, November 19th, with the traditional Yurumein re-enactment of the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize in 1832, a parade, mass, and cultural day. The annual public and bank holiday were celebrated under the theme ‘Вun, Аmürü Nu Наgаbürіbеі Gаrіnаgu; Аwаnѕеrаmеmе Wаmá Lаu,’ which means ‘I for you, You for me is the Garifuna Way: Let us Continue to Move Forward.’

San Pedro House of Culture tentatively to re-open in 2023
While other Houses of Culture have re-opened across the country, the San Pedro House of Culture (SPHOC) remains closed. A National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) representative indicated that they expect the island’s venue for exhibits and traditional events to re-open. They anticipate this taking place early next year (January). In the meantime, the SPHOC’s building will be used by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) to host activities such as meetings.

Activities announced for Garifuna Settlement Day in San Pedro
The island Garifuna community has prepared a program listing the celebrations regarding this year’s Garifuna Settlement Day. The activities started on Tuesday, November 15th, with drumming sessions at the central park and will span through the 19th, when the Garifuna Settlement Day, a public and bank holiday, will be observed across the country.

Our teams at Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) are preparing for approaching Tropical Storm Lisa, which is expected to become a hurricane that is likely to make landfall within 24 hours. As a part of BEL’s Hurricane Preparedness Plan, we are monitoring the weather closely and taking all necessary measures to maintain continuous, safe and reliable service to our customers, where possible. Our teams, resources and equipment have been mobilized to ensure that we are prepared to assess and recover from any impacts of the approaching storm.

The second part of a horror movie called Paradies completed its filming on Monday, August 29th, in northern Ambergris Caye. The thriller/suspense film features a local and international cast starting with the director and one of the main actors being Belizean.

BTB reports profit of over 50k after hosting first-ever International Music and Food Festival
A report of the International Music and Food Festival held in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, on July 30th and 31st was issued by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB). The first-ever festival featured Belizean and international entertainers along with international cuisine attracting thousands of travelers to the island. The festival saw its share of criticism, and its performance was questioned due to the number of funds invested. The BTB, however, reported on Wednesday, August 24th, that even though the event budget was exceeded by over $100,000, it still yielded a profit of a little over $51,000.
