On Thursday, February 4th, the San Pedro Cancer Society joined the millions around the world who hold events in honoring those who have lost their fight or overcome cancer. In celebration of the day, The San Pedro Cancer Society held their annual lighted candle walk which started shortly after 6:30PM from the Central Park. Residents and local business representatives on the island came out to join and support the solidarity walk.
The procession made its way through the main streets of Town, all the way to the roundabout of the San Juan area and then headed down through Pescador Drive ending at the Central Park. Many of the participants in the walk have lost family members and friends to the disease. They carried their memories with them as they held lighted candles in their honor, along with printed pictures of their loved ones. Locals and visitors alike joined the walk and many passersby applauded the wonderful solidarity and unity of the community.
The local business community has been very generous in always making contributions to the organization. Every single donation is used to assist individuals battling cancer in San Pedro, thus, everyone is encouraged to always assist the cause whenever they can. President Gonzalo Muñoz was very pleased with the turn out of the walk and thanked everyone present for making the effort and giving their time to the worthy cause. He reminded everyone that cancer is not a death sentence, and with early detection and proper treatment it can be overcome. He added that there are sad and happy stories in San Pedro when it comes to the fight against this disease, but if everyone comes together, anything is possible and the society is willing and ready to give assistance to anyone in need. He ended by stating that the San Pedro Cancer Society is in need of new members and encouraged anyone to join them so they can increase their membership.
