U.S. Donates Medical Supplies to Support Belize’s National Referral Hospital

 In a ceremony held on April 28th, U.S. officials donated medical supplies funded through the U.S. Department of Defense Southern Command’s Humanitarian Assistance Program to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).  Bilateral Affairs Officer in the U.S. Embassy’s Security Cooperation Office Major Anissa Johnson presided over the donation ceremony, which Chief Executive Officer for the KHMH Chandra Nisbet Cansino attended.

Meet new Ambergris Caye’s health inspector, Zane Bradley

The last time San Pedro Town welcomed a public health inspector was in 2017, when Christina Sanchez-Martinez, hailing from the southern Stann Creek District, officially took the post. Fast-forward to 2022, and San Pedro has a new senior health officer. He is Belize City native Zane Bradley, who is proud to be serving on the island. Bradley shared that the experience with island residents has been smooth, and he looks forward to working with the community.

Belize joins the world on April 25th in celebrating World Malaria Day. The occasion is an opportunity to keep malaria high on the global health agenda. Locally, Malaria Day is being observed under the theme, “Maintaining a Malaria-free Belize starts with me.”

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons, if affected, may present symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections and arthritis.

Island Emergency Services celebrates first anniversary

From the moment islander Abner Bacab became a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), he grew a project that later became Island Emergency Services (IES). The company, equipped with an ambulance, responds to medical emergencies on the island. On Sunday, April 10th, Bacab and his team celebrated their first anniversary in service with a health and family fair at the Boca del Rio beach park to commemorate this achievement.

Ministries of Investment and Agriculture Visit Southern Quintana Roo on Familiarization Tour

Senior representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise visited Quintana Roo as part of an Investment Exchange Programme, which entailed a familiarization tour to an industrial park and agro-processing facilities in the southern part of the Mexican state. Hon. Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, led the Belize delegation.

Despite removal of COVID-19 regulations, vaccination campaign continues

Although most COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Belize, the vaccination campaign continues. The COVID-19 virus is still around, and health authorities continue to vaccinate as many people as possible. Currently, less than 50% of the country’s population has been fully vaccinated.

No more COVID-19 restrictions within Belize; some travel requirements remain

As of Friday, April 1st, all remaining COVID-19 restrictions within Belize will be lifted as per the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Restrictions mandating facemask wearing and social distancing will be lifted, and activities such as concerts and large gatherings will be allowed. Night clubs and bars will also be allowed to operate. The only restrictions that remain in place are the requirement for visitors/tourists ages five and above to present proof of immunization or a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival, and Belizeans planning to travel out of the country must be vaccinated.
