San Pedro Town Council assigns portfolios

The SPTC councilors have gotten their respective portfolio assignments, and for the first time in a long time, a female, Dianeli Aranda, is Deputy Mayor.

Newly elected San Pedro Town Council sworn in; PM Briceño attends the ceremony

Mayor-elect Gualberto 'Wally' Nuñez and his six councillors were sworn in on Monday, March 8th, during a short ceremony at the Ambergris Stadium. The swearing-in was carried out by Legal Counsel Eduardo Aguilar and Senior Justice of the Peace Evelia Paz. The occasion was also attended by the Prime Minister of Belize, the Honourable John Briceño, Area Representative and Minister of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, the Honourable Andre Perez, Minister of Health and Wellness (MOHW), the Honourable Michel Chebat, and a host of friends and family members.

After 18 years under a UDP leadership, San Pedro has a PUP Town Council; Wally Nuñez is Mayor

The People’s United Party (PUP) slate, led by Mayoral candidate Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, was declared the winner of the 2021 Municipal Elections held on Wednesday, March 3rd in San Pedro Town. The swap in power brought an end to almost two decades of control by the United Democratic Party (UDP), which has governed the island since 2003.

Electorate turnout picking up in San Pedro municipal elections

With a total of 4,029 cast by 4PM, a slight increase in the turnout of the electorate was observed. With less than two hours before the polls officially close, the recent update shows about 50% of registered voters have cast their ballot, with a further increase anticipated by the end of the day.

Island businessman interrogated by the Commission of Inquiry on dubious land transactions and relation with former Deputy Prime Minister

On Friday, February 26th, the commission interrogated another group of persons of interest, among them San Pedro’s businessman Kevin (Zhourong) Li, who was questioned about his relationship with the former Minister in charge of the Lands Department Hugo Patt, and how he was able to obtain multiple properties within a short time.

Prime Minister visits San Pedro ahead of municipal elections; UDP slate presents manifesto

The campaign trail continues in San Pedro Town with both slates of the People’s United Party (PUP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) making final preparations for the upcoming Municipal Elections on Wednesday, March 3rd. On Friday, February 26th, Prime Minister Honourable John Briceño landed on San Pedro to support the PUP slate ahead of the big day. Meanwhile, the UDP group launched their manifesto early the same day.

Security forces work together to deter piracy activities increasing on Belizean waters

The Belize Police Department and the national coast guard have joined forces to combat piracy activities following the aggravated burglary at Lark Caye, six miles east of Placencia Village in southern Belize. On Friday, February 19th, thieves invaded and burglarized the home of Austrian retiree 46-year-old Christian Gusenbauer, who lives on the said caye, and shot him once.
