BEL shares with Ambergris Caye stakeholders new power expansion plan

On Wednesday, November 29th, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) engaged San Pedro Ambergris Caye stakeholders in an informative session about the company's power generation expansion plan. The project, dubbed BEL's Generation Expansion Plan, outlined the strategic initiatives to meet the growing power demands of Ambergris Caye and avoid an energy crisis on the island.

San Pedro stakeholders meet to address the alarming sargassum situation

On Wednesday, May 11th, concerned stakeholders and residents of San Pedro Town attended a meeting held in the conference room of the San Pedro Town Council to discuss ideas on how to tackle the issue of sargassum. The increase in the influx of the brown seaweed has become alarming, threatening the tourism industry, and promoting the National Sargassum Task Force to ask destinations like San Pedro to submit a plan of action. The meeting discussed several ideas and included a presentation on how experts are dealing with the situation in Mexico.

The current high tourism season is reportedly experiencing a good reception, with many stakeholders across the country reporting one of the busiest periods since the pandemic began in 2020. Although businesswise, things may be looking better, the new COVID-19 variants are a growing concern once again. On May 14th, 2021, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) launched its Belizean Traveller Campaign – the organization’s signature event that aims to boost domestic tourism by encouraging Belizeans to be tourists in their own country.

The project is a joint venture with the Belize Hotel Association (BHA), and aims to allow Belizeans to be tourists in their country via attractive discounts at top hotels.
