Jazelie Azueta removed as UDP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South

Following a meeting on Saturday, September 2nd by the National Party Council (NPC) of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Jazelie ‘Jaz’ Azueta was formally removed as Standard Bearer for the Belize Rural South (BRS) constituency. According to members within the party, this is the consequence of not supporting the protest held by Belize City members of the UDP in San Pedro Town on Thursday, August 31st, against the current People’s United Party (PUP) government. The decision to remove Azueta was not welcomed among UDP supporters on the island, and on Monday, September 4th, Azueta released a statement on her dismissal.

Jazeli ‘Jaz’ Azueta endorsed as UDP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South

At a private event on Saturday, December 10th, Jazeli ‘Jaz’ Azueta was officially endorsed as the United Democratic Party (UDP) standard-bearer for the Belize Rural South (BRS) constituency consisting of San Pedro, Town Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. The closed-door activity also saw the election of UDP delegates, who will work alongside Azueta as she prepares to contest the BRS seat in the next general elections set for 2025.

Caye Caulker Health Center officially inaugurated

A little over a year after it was first announced, Honourable Andre Perez, Area Representative for Belize Rural South (BRS) (Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye), hosted a ground-breaking ceremony for a new polyclinic in Caye Caulker. On Monday, November 21st, Perez was back in La Isla Cariñosa along with the Minister of Health and Wellness (MOHW), the Honourable Kevin Bernard delivering the completed polyclinic. The new health center, named Caye Caulker Health Center, will improve the medical services on the island, which is a popular tourist destination in the country.

BRS Area Representative Hon. Andre Perez talks about future plans

After the November 2020 victory for the People's United Party and consequently forming the new government, the administration believes that the country's challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic are improving. Area Representative for Belize Rural South (BRS) (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker), Honourable Andre Perez, said during an interview with The San Pedro Sun that he now feels confident in delivering on all his main promises because the economy is in better shape. The work ahead is to finish the health center in Caye Caulker, build a hospital for San Pedro Town, develop infrastructure (bridge and roads), build schools north of San Pedro Town, and develop other important programs.

Redistricting process begins; What’s in it for Belize Rural South?

The process for possible redistricting in Belize has started and is to conclude before the end of 2023. A task force appointed by the Elections and Boundaries Commission will submit its recommendations to Parliament, potentially bringing changes to the different constituencies. San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker are under the third largest electoral division - Belize Rural South (BRS). As per local authorities, redistricting could bring changes. Still, it's too early to know how this exercise could modify the islands' constituency.

BRS Area Representative supports amnesty program

A campaign promise, an amnesty program designed to legalize undocumented immigrants in Belize, is expected to start in 2022. An estimated 40,000 irregular immigrants (men, women, and children) will benefit from this program. In the constituency of Belize Rural South (BRS), Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez supports this initiative and advised those living on the islands with irregular immigration status to stay tuned for updates on this upcoming program.

Hon. Andre Perez shares Belize’s commitment to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing

Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and transnational organized crime in the fisheries sector has in the past affected the reputation of many Caribbean countries, including Belize. To combat this issue, Caribbean ministers responsible for fisheries and blue economic growth are holding meetings to address the issue during this year's Caribbean Week of Agriculture, celebrated virtually under the theme 'Transforming our Food Systems.' Belize was represented by the Honourable Andre Perez, Minister of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, and shared the country's commitment to strengthen regional cooperation in the fight against IUU fishing.

Immigration Dept. to assist foreigners unable to update their legal status in the country

As previously hinted by Belize Rural South (BRS) Area Representative the Honourable Andre Perez, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration announced on Tuesday, September 28th that foreigners/migrants seeking to update their legal status in the country can now visit their nearest immigration office. This is for persons who have not been able to maintain a regular status in the country between April 2020 and September 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
