In the upcoming 2025 general elections, Belizean’s will head to the polls on March 12th to elect 31 members of the House of Representatives.

Belize Rural South Standard Bearers participate in debate ahead of general election

As the next general election approaches, the four candidates vying for Area Representative of Belize Rural South (BRS) participated in a Standard Bearer Debate on Wednesday, March 5th. The event took place at the Lions Den in San Pedro Town and was organized by The San Pedro Sun and Reef TV/Radio. Starting at 7 PM, the candidates answered questions addressing issues that impact the constituency.

Who will be the next Belize Rural South Area Representative? Four Candidates officially nominated for the 2025 General Election

Political candidates across Belize were officially nominated on Monday, February 24th, to participate in the General Election scheduled for March 12th. Nomination Day provides an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their support through parades. In the Belize Rural South (BRS) constituency, which includes Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, the ruling People’s United Party (PUP), two factions of the United Democratic Party (UDP), and the Belizeans Justice Movement presented their candidates to contest the seat in the upcoming elections.

Manuel Heredia returns to politics in Belize Rural South

Former Area Representative for Belize Rural South (BRS), which includes Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, Manuel Heredia has come out of retirement to run for the upcoming general elections scheduled for March 12th. Heredia is once again seeking candidacy for the United Democratic Party (UDP) under the leadership of Honourable Tracy Panton. He previously held the BRS seat from 2003 to 2020.

National Health Insurance program officially rolls out in Caye Caulker

The National Health Insurance (NHI) program now covers residents in all of Belize Rural South, which includes San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. The government program reached the Caye Caulker community on Friday, September 27th. A private clinic and a pharmacy signed contracts with the NHI to provide access to primary healthcare services and medication at a significantly reduced cost. The two accredited institutions are Dr. D’s Clinic and Prescription Value Pharmacy. To join NHI, Hicaqueños can register at these institutions with their Social Security Card. If their cards have expired, island residents can still register using their Social Security number.

Mahmoud Dani Lagha appointed as UDP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South

San Pedro resident Mahmoud Dani Lagha has been appointed as the new Standard Bearer for the Belize Rural South (BRS) Constituency under the United Democratic Party (UDP). The announcement was made public on Tuesday, August 27th, taking many islanders by surprise. The young entrepreneur is determined to contest the BRS seat in the next general elections, set for November 2025.

PUP endorses Andre Perez for Belize Rural South

The People's United Party (PUP) has officially endorsed Andre Perez, the current Belize Rural South (BRS) area representative, for the 2025 General Elections. The endorsement event took place at Boca del Rio Beach Park in San Pedro Town on Friday, August 23rd. Many supporters and specially invited guests attended to support Perez's candidacy to continue representing San Pedro and Caye Caulker.

Ramon Vasquez withdraws application for Belize Rural South UPD Standard Bearer seat

On Tuesday, August 21st, an official statement was issued announcing that Ramon Vasquez, the Chairman and CEO of Belize Broadcasting Network (BBN), had decided to resign from his position as the standard bearer for the United Democracy Party (UDP) in anticipation of the upcoming General Elections scheduled for November 2025. Vasquez was appointed as the standard bearer for Belize Rural South (BRS), encompassing Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, on August 20, 2024, but has opted to step down from his role.
