Regulations on alcohol sales on Good Friday
In December 2022, an amendment was made to the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Regulation, which allows most establishments to sell alcohol on Good Friday during the Easter weekend starting from March 29th. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, the Town Council stated on Tuesday, March 26th, that only Public and General Liquor Licenses (wholesale) holders, including those with Malt licenses (retail), will not be allowed to operate on Good Friday.

Amended liquor licensing regulation allows sale of alcohol on Good Friday
The banning of alcohol sales on Good Friday may now be considered a thing of the past following the amendment to the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Regulation passed in December 2022. As per the amendment to that Statutory Instrument (SI) and explained by Commissioner of Police (ComPol) Chester Williams on Wednesday, April 5, the change in the law allows establishments to sell alcohol as usual. However, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) issued a note prohibiting the sale of liquor on Good Friday until 8PM. According to local authorities, this allows traditional church services/activities to occur throughout the day.

Regulations on sale of alcohol during Good Friday
The Easter holiday is here, from Friday, April 7th, through Monday, April 10th. San Pedro Town is a popular destination among visitors; however, specific regulations must be observed during the holy week. Since many residents celebrate the religious aspect of Easter, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) asks everyone to respect the traditions associated with these dates and observe a ‘dry’ Good Friday. As such, on Wednesday, April 5th, Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez explained the rules on the sale of alcohol on Friday.

After two years, COVID-19 restrictions were finally lifted. Belizeans across the country publicly celebrated the Easter holidays with various activities ranging from sporting events to religious and popular beach concerts and parties. Good Friday sees the reenactment of the Passion of Christ in San Pedro Town
Easter is considered the holiest time of the year. In San Pedro Town, the Roman Catholic Church takes pride in celebrating the occasion honoring the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This year, besides their scheduled church activities, one of the main events held on Good Friday, April 15th, saw the first-ever reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on the island with an evening procession through downtown, which later ended at central park.

Strict restrictions on the sale of alcohol during Good Friday and Easter weekend
As the Easter holiday draws near, starting this Good Friday, April 15th, the Belize Police Department has issued a set of regulations focusing on the sale of alcohol during this festive time. The rules address the different types of liquor license holders and other restrictions applying to businesses and individuals. The public is reminded to observe a 'dry' Good Friday (no sale of alcoholic beverages), as this is the religious aspect of Easter.

Island Roman Catholics celebrate Easter despite the COVID-19 threat
Easter is observed as the holiest time of the year among many religious communities around the world, as they celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. In San Pedro Town, the Roman Catholic Church observes the occasion every year with many scheduled events to honor Christ. This year, however, the celebrations saw a couple of changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The mass gathering was not allowed and during the annual procession, which usually sees hundreds of faithful Catholics participating on Good Friday, the religious walk witnessed the smallest procession, registering just a handful of persons during the anticipated event.

National Days of Prayer and Fasting
The Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow has approved three National Days of Prayer & Fasting, from Good Friday, April 10th to Easter Sunday, April 12th, 2020. Throughout the nation, the Council of Churches will celebrate the three days with combined times for prayer, repentance, worship, and celebration.
