Belize welcomes two new resident ambassadors

As of March 30, Belize has welcomed two new resident ambassadors from key allies, Mexico and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Governor-General Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam received the Letters of Credence from Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Amino C. Y. Chi and Mexican Ambassador Her Excellency Ana Luisa Vallejo Barba at Belize House in Belmopan.

Caye International Bank (CIB) President Dr. Luigi Wewege recently met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during the latter’s official visit to Panama. President Steinmeier’s regional tour, held from March 16th to 20th, included stops in Panama, Guatemala, and Mexico, focusing on strengthening economic ties, trade, and democratic cooperation.

Trinational agreement signed to safeguard the Greater Maya Forest

Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico have signed a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in the conservation and sustainable management of the Greater Maya Forest, one of the largest and most significant tropical forest systems in the Americas. The agreement was signed on March 24, 2026, during a trinational workshop hosted by Belize from March 22nd to 28th in Placencia Village, Stann Creek District.

No Injuries Reported After Water Taxi Runs Aground in Southern Ambergris Caye

A routine boat trip that began in Chetumal, Mexico, and was bound for San Pedro Town on November 16th took an unexpected turn when a San Pedro Belize Express water taxi ran aground in shallow waters. The incident occurred near the Belize Coast Guard base shortly after the vessel departed the San Pedro International Terminal en route to Caye Caulker. No injuries were reported, and a second vessel was dispatched to safely transport passengers to the Caye Caulker port.

Central American Independence Celebration Perseveres Despite Rain

The 2025 Noche Centro Americana celebration in San Pedro was held on Saturday, September 13th, at the Saca Chispas Field. It marked the independence anniversaries of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Mexico. Despite heavy rain, the event still drew a supportive crowd.

Consultation Proposed on Bridge Linking Ambergris Caye to Mexico

Environmentalists and concerned residents in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, are raising concerns about the potential negative impacts of a proposed road and bridge to Mexico that would run through the Bacalar Chico National Park. Prime Minister Honorable Dr. John Briceño first confirmed the idea of connecting Ambergris Caye with Mexico in October 2021. Four years later, the project is still under discussion, but on August 15th, the Prime Minister announced that consultations will take place on the island before any work begins.
