Belmopan leads Caribbean with endorsement of Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

The Belizean capital of Belmopan has signed a motion calling for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, a global mechanism that aims to explicitly address the source of 86% of CO2 emissions that cause climate change: fossil fuels. The support was made official by a statement from the mayor with council approval.

Ministry of Rural Transformation Trains Staff in Geophysical Water Detection Techniques

On July 11, 2022, the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government embarked on a five-day training session on geophysical water detection techniques using electrical resistivity technology. The training is being provided for the Rural Water and Supply Unit and some of the Rural Community Development Officers. Representatives from the Hydrology and Geology departments, the National Meteorological Service, the National Climate Change Office and the Belize Social Investment Fund are also participating.

Cuban Coastal Experts Making Headway in Field Assessment

A team of Cuban experts from the Institute of Marine Sciences and GAMMA S.A. has been covering significant ground in the south for the past two weeks as they conduct preliminary coastal erosion assessments. The field assessment is being conducted under the project entitled “Enhancing the Climate Resilience of Dangriga and Hopkins.”

New Survey to Capture Data on Climate Change and its Impacts

The National Climate Change Office under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), and the National Red Cross, has embarked on a nationwide survey to capture citizens’ knowledge and attitudes towards climate change, and its impact on their country.

Ministry of Rural Transformation Receives Truck and Water Bowser

At a handing-over ceremony held on September 13, 2021, the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government received a truck and water bowser from the Enabling Gender-Responsive Disaster Recovery, Climate and Environmental Resilience in the Caribbean (EnGenDER) Project, being implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and National Climate Change Office (NCCO).

REDD+ spearheads training for journalists on climate change and its effects

The training/workshop on the 14th and 15th of May was organized by REDD+, which stands for Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, (+) conservation, sustainable management of forests carbon, and stock enhancement. Other partners involved in the event included the National Climate Change Office (NCCO) and the Forest Department. The training raised awareness of Belize's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impacts of deforestation and forest degradation.

Belize to implement the REDD+ Project initiatives

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Immigration through the National Climate Change Office is implementing the Readiness Preparation Project (REDD+).

Our Forest is Our Future – Belize’s forests worth USD$35 Million to REDD+

Belize’s forests have provided jobs for Belizeans from the birth of our nation; logwood and mahogany were our first exports, but now keeping our forests alive an uncut can be worth US$35 million. Our forests contain 7 million tons of carbon dioxide, which at current market prices of US$5 per tons of carbon on international markets for carbon credits, adds up to USD$35 million to Belize.
