Belize Honorary Consul of Florida reaching out to Belizeans post-Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian battered the Florida peninsula on Wednesday, September 28th, with catastrophic storm surges, winds, and flooding. The badly affected state is home to people from many countries, including Belize, and the Belizean diplomatic mission is already working with local partners to assist those affected.

Group of tourists joins San Pedro Independence Day Carnival parade

The carnival road march in San Pedro Town for Independence Day saw hundreds of people lining the streets to celebrate September 21st after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The colourful, fun and anticipated festivities included a carnival march with dancers in outstanding outfits dancing to the beat of Soca music. The parade not only included Belizean dancers but a group of fun and vibrant young ladies from the United States who decided to celebrate the country’s special day Belizean style by joining the parade. With the help of the Mother Nature Creation Carnival band members, they found costumes and blended in the parade, dancing and singing through the streets of San Pedro, celebrating Belize’s birthday.

Jasmine Hartin’s “Manslaughter by Negligence” trial to begin in April

Canadian national Jasmine Hartin was back at the Supreme Court in Belize City on Tuesday, September 27th, for a case management hearing on her Manslaughter by Negligence charge for the death of Police Superintendent Henry Jemmott.

Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation to Participate in the 41st Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization

The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation and their partners at the Department of Civil Aviation are set to attend the 41st Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada.

Joe Pate wins third place at Pan American Cocktail Tournament in Venezuela

Island bartender Joseph Joe Pate is returning home with a third-place medal after competing at the Pan American Cocktail Tournament in Valencia, Venezuela. Pate from Nauti Crab Bar and Grill competed against the best of the best from several other countries participating in the prestigious tournament. The other top participants taking second and first place were from Uruguay and Spain, respectively.

San Pedro Pirates FC to face Altitude FC today after initial game postponed over the weekend

The island’s premier football team, the San Pedro Pirates FC, has traveled to Independence Village in southern Belize on Wednesday, September 28th, to face Altitude FC following the postponement of the game on Saturday. The team’s management saw some inconveniences with the game scheduled for the middle of the week as some players could not travel with the team. Not only does it leave the team with fewer players, but the island team plays this Saturday, October 1st, at home in San Pedro.

Beach erosion in downtown San Pedro continues

The beaches of Ambergris Caye, particularly in the downtown area of San Pedro Town, could be a thing of the past if the ongoing erosion is not addressed. This problem is not new, as beaches have been eroding for years; however, some areas of the coastline in downtown San Pedro are disappearing at a rapid pace.

Ministry of Economic Development Signs MOU with Canada-CARICOM Expert Deployment Mechanism

On September 27, 2022, Dr. Osmond Martinez, Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Economic Development, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Mrs. Wendy Harris, President of the Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO). On September 6, 2022, Cabinet gave its approval for the Ministry of Economic Development to sign the MOU in connection with the Canada-CARICOM Expert Deployment Mechanism (CCEDM).
