Belize and Guatemala Foreign Ministers meet at the OAS office to discuss territorial dispute
As Belize and Guatemala continue to strengthen their bilateral relations, a special meeting was held on January 22 at the Organization of American States (OAS) between the foreign ministers of both countries. The discussions touched on ongoing opportunities and challenges and focused on charting a positive course toward a peaceful resolution of Guatemala’s claim at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Inflation in Belize has continued to fluctuate over recent months, dipping to 0.4% nationally in November 2025 from 0.9% in October. Areas within the country’s productive zones, including San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye, continue to record higher inflation levels, registering rates above 3% during the first eight months of 2025.

Police Present National Report; Major Crimes Drop in San Pedro
The Belize Police Department reported a 1% reduction in major crimes nationally for 2025, according to figures presented at the National COMPSTAT Meeting held on January 22 at the Police Training Academy in Belmopan. The report showed a decrease from 1,098 major crimes in 2024 to 1,086 in 2025. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, a 10% reduction in major crimes was recorded.

A fundraiser to assist the family of Hilton Claasen and Ambar Ayala was held at Wayo’s Beach Bar in the Boca del Rio area on January 24th. Claasen and Ayala’s home was damaged by a fire on January 10th, prompting the community to come together in support.
