Foundation for Belize Donates Laptop to Support Gender-Based Violence Unit in San Pedro

On February 25th, the Foundation for Belize donated a brand-new laptop to the San Pedro Police Department to support its newly designated officer assigned to handle gender-based violence and domestic abuse cases. The equipment was presented at the San Pedro Police Station in the presence of Deputy Commander Jorge Lemus and Foundation for Belize Executive Director Danieli Aranda.

San Pedro Town Council Publishes Audited 2024 Financial Statements

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has released its audited financial statements for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. Prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards for Small and Medium-sized Entities (IFRS for SMEs) and audited by Moore Belize LLP, the report was made public on February 18th. The statements provide an overview of the Council’s revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities, offering transparency into municipal operations in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.

Barge Activity Near Mexico Rocks Raises Environmental Concerns

Barge activity near the Mexico Rocks protected area in northern Ambergris Caye has once again drawn public concern, months after a controversial dredging project in the area came under heavy scrutiny. The dredging initiative, approved in June 2025, was intended to facilitate the passage of barges transporting construction materials and other goods. At the time, tourism stakeholders and environmental advocates questioned the decision, arguing that the area is environmentally sensitive and that such activity could jeopardize coral formations within the nearby marine reserve.

San Pedro Mobilizes Ahead of Expected Heavy Sargassum Season

On February 24th, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) urged community partners to begin preparations for the upcoming sargassum season. Early windy conditions in February brought the first influx of the brown seaweed to the shores of San Pedro. According to reports, the 2026 season is expected to bring large amounts of sargassum to the region, and collective efforts will be required to keep the island’s main beach areas as clear as possible.

Mexico Says Security Stabilized After Cartel Leader’s Death

The Mexican government has stated that the security situation in the western state of Jalisco and other affected regions has stabilized after a wave of violence erupted on February 22nd following the death of drug lord Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho.”

Students Encouraged to “Dream It. Plan It. Achieve It.” at SPHS Career Week

San Pedro High School (SPHS) officially launched its 2026 Career Week on Monday, February 23rd, with a vibrant opening assembly in the school auditorium. The event was organized by school counselor Pauline Buller and featured guest speaker Dr. Rene Villanueva, owner of Love FM.

Mr. and Ms. Holy Cross Pageant Returns to the Stage

Holy Cross Anglican Primary School brought back its Mr. and Ms. Holy Cross Pageant on February 24th at 6PM, reviving the popular event after an 11-year hiatus. The evening featured 12 contestants representing the Infant, Middle, and Upper Divisions, with judges crowning a Mr. and Ms. Holy Cross in each category.

IDB-Funded Wastewater Project Moves Forward for Caye Caulker

Plans are moving forward to upgrade Caye Caulker’s sanitation infrastructure, following the Cabinet’s approval of a US$10 million loan to build a wastewater collection and treatment system for the island. The project will now seek approval in the House of Representatives and proceed under a sovereign-guarantee financing agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
