As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The San Pedro Sun continues its commitment to promoting public health education by sharing vital information to increase awareness and encourage early detection. October serves as a reminder nationwide of the importance of understanding breast cancer, its risks, and available treatment options. This feature includes insight from Dr. Josselin Blanco, General Practitioner at Ambergris Hope Hospital, who emphasizes the importance of regular screening and informed awareness in saving lives.

Uniting to Support Belize Healthcare

27 registrants and walk-ins came to the blood drive on July 5th, coordinated by Island Donors Squad (IDS) at Ambergris Hope Hospital (AHH). 13 pints were collected. The blood drawn will be allocated between the AHH reserve and assigned to people requiring blood on the island.

San Mateo Shooting Leaves One Dead, Another Hospitalized

On Thursday night, July 3rd, island residents Alfredo Trapp, 28, and Gabriel Villafranco Salazar, 38, were targeted by two gunmen as they traveled in a golf cart. Trapp was fatally shot, while Salazar was left in critical condition and later airlifted to Belize City for further medical attention.

From San Pedro With Love: Islanders Called to Give

The 2025 World Blood Donor Day (WDD) slogan is "Give blood, give hope: together we save lives". This message emphasizes the impact of voluntary blood donors on saving lives, and encourages both new and existing donors to give every three months. In honor of World Blood Donor Day (June 14th), Island Donors Squad (IDS) will host their next blood drive at Ambergris Hope Hospital (AHH).

Caribbean Sprinter Connects Communities

Recognizing the life-saving impact of voluntary blood donors, Caribbean Sprinter continues to support this important country wide community effort in Belize. Over the past two years, Caribbean Sprinter and Island Donors Squad (IDS) have partnered to support the country by organizing chaperoned blood donation trips from Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker to Belize City.

PAHO Report Shows 15.5% Increase in Voluntary Blood Donations in Latin America and the Caribbean

In a report released on June 12th, just ahead of World Blood Donor Day, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) revealed a significant 15.5% increase in blood donations across Latin America and the Caribbean in 2023 compared to 2020.

Blood storage unit opens at San Pedro’s Ambergris Hope Hospital

On April 5th, the first blood storage unit in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, was officially inaugurated at the Ambergris Hope Hospital. Located on Pescador Drive, this facility currently holds approximately ten units of blood but can store up to 50 units if needed. In addition to blood, the storage unit also contains fresh frozen plasma, essential for treating bleeding incidents.
