Ribbon Cutting Ceremony held for Improvements at John Greif II Municipal Airport
On Wednesday, February 19th, a ceremony was held in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, to officially unveil the upgrades to the John Greif II Municipal Airport. The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) has made significant improvements to one of Belize’s busiest airports, including thermoplastic markings, new taxiway lights, a new holding bay area, modern LED runway lights, and complete resurfacing of the runway. These enhancements are expected to make take-offs and landings safer and facilitate smoother and more efficient aircraft movement.

San Pedro Town’s Municipal airstrip upgraded
The John Greif II Municipal Airport in San Pedro Town underwent significant upgrades in December 2024, enhancing its capacity and safety features for peak tourism season. This project, which had a budget of approximately $3.7 million, was a collaborative effort involving the Belize Airports Authority, the Ministry of Tourism, and private sector partners such as Maya Island Air and Tropic Air, along with a grant from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Caye Caulker airport reopens
On Wednesday, September 20th, the Caye Caulker Municipal Airport reopened after renovation. The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) said that the airport underwent a transformation that will enhance the travel experience and safety for both locals and visitors to Caye Caulker. The airport closed on July 18th, and the BAA stated that the central repairs included improvements to the runway. Some of the issues included undulations considered dangerous for the routine daily flights operated by the local airlines, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air.

Caye Caulker Airport rehabilitation project underway
The Caye Caulker Municipal Airport is once again closed for much-needed renovations. The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) reported that the airport closed on July 18th, and after that, rehabilitation work started. As the airport undergoes significant upgrades, those planning to visit La Isla Cariñosa will need to do so via water taxi until works at the airport have been completed.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve concludes its 2023 Reef Fest with a fun and educational fair
After a full week of fun and educational activities, the 2023 Hol Chan Marine Reserve Reef Fest concluded with a grand fair at the Boca del Rio Beach Park on Saturday, May 27th. The family event featured informational booths by several local and off-island organizations, as well as live music, a kayak race, games, and lots of giveaways.

Starting early in May, the Belize Airports Authority (BAA) announced that the Caye Caulker Airport would be closed for six weeks for a much-needed runway upgrade.

Four islanders appointed to BAA’s new board of directors
San Pedro's Ricardo Martin was named chairman of the new board of directors at the Belize Airports Authority (BAA). Along with him were six other new members, including three more islanders, Natalie Arceo as secretary, Sandy Roberts as deputy chairman, and Leonardo Nicholas Varela as one of the directors.

Local flights to Caye Caulker to resume ahead of schedule
These speedy developments in the airstrip’s renovation have prompted Tropic Air to move the resumption date of their flight services to Caye Caulker to October 1, 2018, instead of November 15th as previously announced.
