No one charged for Elvis Polanco’s murder

On November 19th, San Pedro Town experienced the first murder in over a year after island businessman Elvis Polanco, 43, was gunned down in an attempted robbery. Since then, the police have continued investigating, but no one has been held liable for Polanco’s murder. On Monday, November 28th, Commissioner of Police (ComPol) Chester Williams said a major crime team was dispatched to San Pedro to investigate the unfortunate incident further.

Suspects accused of Hopkins nightclub mass shooting in police custody

A deadly shooting executed by three men in the Garifuna village of Hopkins in southern Belize shocked many across the country and was condemned by local and governmental organizations. According to authorities, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 31st, leaving two dead and eight injured. The altercation was believed to be triggered by one of the deceased and the shooters. The police have since detained three suspects, and an investigation will be taking place before any charges are levied.

Off-duty BDF soldier shot dead by joint police patrol; government condemns the incident

Belize Defense soldier 29 year-old Jessie Escobar, was shot and killed in front of his family in Santa Familia Village, Cayo District. The gunman is Police Constable Juan Carlos Morales who is attached to a joint police patrol. A surveillance video reveals that there was no aggression by the deceased and the Commissioner of Police described the use of force unjustifiable.

New SI relaxes curfew on weekends; casinos re-open

The current curfew has been amended. On Fridays and Saturdays, the curfew will be from midnight to 5AM and from Sundays to Thursdays from 10PM to 5AM. The update is part of the new Statutory Instrument (SI) which goes into effect on Thursday, April 15th.

Police warn about Easter gatherings; curfew remains the same

Easter is usually a busy time in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, and is popular for beach-time extravaganzas. However, for the second year in a row, Easter will be a quiet one because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The San Pedro Police Formation reminds everyone that hosting social events is against the current COVID-19 protocols. Anyone violating these regulations will be dealt with the full extent of the law. Currently there is a curfew from 10AM to 5AM, which expires this weekend and will continue for 15 days.

ComPol Williams warns against Easter gatherings

On Wednesday, March 10th, Commissioner of Police (ComPol) Chester Williams issued a stern warning regarding social events/gatherings for Easter. In a press release, the ComPol said that such activities are still prohibited under the current COVID-19 regulations.

Security forces work together to deter piracy activities increasing on Belizean waters

The Belize Police Department and the national coast guard have joined forces to combat piracy activities following the aggravated burglary at Lark Caye, six miles east of Placencia Village in southern Belize. On Friday, February 19th, thieves invaded and burglarized the home of Austrian retiree 46-year-old Christian Gusenbauer, who lives on the said caye, and shot him once. 

New police barracks inaugurated in Caye Caulker

On Friday, October 30th, police officers attached to the Caye Caulker police formation were presented with new police barracks. Attending the new building's inauguration was top brass from the Ministry of National Security, including Commissioner of Police Chester (ComPol) Williams, along with its minister, the Honourable Michael Peyrefitte, and Area Representative Honourable Manuel Heredia Jr.
