Groundbreaking ceremony held for Blue Economy Park in San Pedrito

On March 6th, the Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management held a groundbreaking ceremony for the upcoming Blue Economy Park in the San Pedrito area. In collaboration with the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) and Councilor Jonnia Duarte, this project aims to beautify the area and create a safe and engaging space for children. The event marked a significant step toward enhancing infrastructure, promoting sustainable development, and improving community facilities, aligning with the ministry’s and council's broader goals.

SPTC continues working to keep San Pedro a child-friendly municipality

In June 2021, San Pedro Town received “silver status” as a certified child-friendly municipality under the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund-UNICEF. Since then, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has been working towards achieving the gold certification, then on to platinum. According to the SPTC, the job has not been easy, but they are working on projects to improve parks and other public areas frequented by families on the island.

San Pedro Town awarded silver status as a Child-Friendly community

A special ceremony organized by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) took place at Central Park on Thursday, June 24th, where a billboard was unveiled commemorating San Pedro’s silver status as a certified child-friendly municipality under the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) watch.  SPTC had signed on to become a Child Friendly Municipality back September 26, 2014. Since San Pedro was formally recognized as a Child Friendly Municipality back in March 2016, the SPTC had been working alongside with CAB, UNICEF, and Caribbean Local Economic Development Project (CARILED) to address San Pedro’s Child Friendly Municipal Developmental Plan.

Businesses can face up to a $5,000 fine for violating COVID-19 regulations during Easter

The Honourable Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, warned businesses, such as restaurants, that they could face a $5,000 fine for COVID-19 regulation violations during the Easter weekend. He also advised against social events at hotels and other private accommodations and instead encouraged the Easter Safety Three W’s campaign- Wash hands, Wear your mask, and Watch your distance.

Newly elected San Pedro Town Council sworn in; PM Briceño attends the ceremony

Mayor-elect Gualberto 'Wally' Nuñez and his six councillors were sworn in on Monday, March 8th, during a short ceremony at the Ambergris Stadium. The swearing-in was carried out by Legal Counsel Eduardo Aguilar and Senior Justice of the Peace Evelia Paz. The occasion was also attended by the Prime Minister of Belize, the Honourable John Briceño, Area Representative and Minister of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, the Honourable Andre Perez, Minister of Health and Wellness (MOHW), the Honourable Michel Chebat, and a host of friends and family members.

New Mayor pledges to audit the San Pedro Town Council

New San Pedro Town Mayor Gualberto 'Wally' Nuñez announced that one of the first things on his agenda is an audit of the town council. One topic of concern is the alleged sale of golf carts belonging to the town council.
