San Mateo Area benefits from IDB Urban Development funds

On August 30th and 31st, during the Third High-Level Dialogue of the Regional Climate Change Platform of Finance and Economy Ministries in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Belize signed a funding agreement. This agreement aims to improve the country’s healthcare services and urban infrastructure, including San Pedro’s San Mateo Subdivision, which will benefit from upgrades to its street network, sewage and drainage infrastructure, public parks, and other essential services.

Belize hosts 12th Annual North American, Central American, and Caribbean Directors of Civil Aviation Meeting in Placencia

On Tuesday, July 9th, the Ministry of Civil Aviation showed appreciation to the Central American and Caribbean Directors of Civil Aviation (NACC/DCA12) at a conference held in Placencia to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. The meeting was convened to discuss practices to improve aviation security and facilitation. The conference brought together approximately one hundred individuals from across the Caribbean, including North and Central America, who convened in Belize for the first time to discuss the sustainable development of the aviation sector.

PUP 7 Celebrates with a Victory Rally in San Pedro Town

After the Municipal Elections held on March 6th, the People’s United Party (PUP) hosted victory rallies throughout the country in each of the six municipalities they won. In San Pedro Town, the newly elected PUP town council held their rally on Saturday, March 23rd, with Belize’s Prime Minister, Honorable John Briceño, in attendance. The celebration included a parade through the town’s streets and a program of events at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex (Saca Chispas), which included official speeches, raffles, and live entertainment.

Construction of the San Pedro and Caye Caulker General Hospital commences with a groundbreaking ceremony

Residents and visitors of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are one step closer to having reliable healthcare services. More than a year after the official announcement of the San Pedro and Caye Caulker General Hospital, the Government of Belize hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, March 1st, to mark the start of construction. This $33 million project is made possible through a grant from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The CARICOM-SICA countries have contended with the worst economic recession in modern history. Cannabis controversy – MOH explains its position on farming cannabis for export

It has been revealed that the Minister of Health, Honourable Pablo Marin, has signed two letters allegedly supporting the establishment of cannabis and hemp farms in southern Belize to develop medical products for exportation. While this news caused much controversy, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has clarified that these contracts are not related to the legalization of marijuana in Belize, as the cultivation of the plants in question complies with the Misuse of Drugs Act.

National budget 2018-2019 debated and approved

During both sessions, the budget proposed by the current administration of the United Democratic Party (UDP) was heavily criticized by members of the Opposition and sternly questioned by some of the members in the Senate. The sentiment was that the budget is ‘more of the same,’ with little incentives for the poor or the growth of the country’s economy.
