High-Level Dialogue of the Regional Climate Change Platform sees adoption of vision supporting climate finance
From August 30th through the 31st, San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, hosted the third High-Level Meeting of the Regional Climate Change Platform of Economy and Finance Ministries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Hosted by the Government of Belize in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the two-day event saw delegations from various countries. The ministerial meeting ended with a powerful demonstration of unity as the participating countries adopted a regional vision for sustainable finance. This collective effort aims to boost sustainable finance and promote effective investments, reinforcing the shared responsibility of the participating countries in meeting their climate commitments.

Belize’s Prime Minister, Honourable John Briceño, was presented on Wednesday, March 9th, with the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon by President Tsai Ing-wen for his role in enhancing ties between Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

His Lordship Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez says the island community is honored to host this important event where Ambergris Caye is exposed to La Isla Bonita to potential business and foreign investment.

Ground-breaking ceremony for new PolyClinic in Caye Caulker held
An official ground-breaking ceremony for a new PolyClinic was celebrated in Caye Caulker. The first phase of the clinic’s construction will be equipped with a pharmacy, triage room, asthma bay, treatment room, consultation rooms, observation rooms, sterile room, waiting areas, restroom, and facilities for staff and visitors. There will also be a laundry room, utility room, and waste disposal and storage facilities.

PM John Briceño makes historic visit to Guatemala
Belize’s Prime Minister (PM), the Honourable John Briceño, is back in the country after an official visit to Guatemala. President Alejandro Giammattei described the visit as historic. The two leaders shared remarks during the meeting on Wednesday, May 2nd, in Guatemala City, where they spoke about common interests such as education, trade, investment, security, and immigration. Both governments also committed to a more substantial and friendly bilateral relationship.

GOB ready to reduce teachers’ and public officers’ salaries; unions poised to respond
On Friday, April 9th, the Government of Belize (GOB) is set to introduce the budget for the new fiscal year 2021-2022 at a special House Sitting in the Capital City of Belmopan. One of the topics of interest is the proposed 10% salary reduction for teachers and public officers. Although this proposal has been rejected by the Belize National Teachers Association,Association of Public Service Senior Managers and the Public Service Union, GOB remains convinced that a salary cut is necessary.
