COP30 Highlights Ongoing Global Challenges in Climate Policy

The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) wrapped up on November 17th in Belém, Brazil, after two weeks of negotiations involving more than 55,000 participants and 194 nations. The summit brought together world leaders, scientists, activists, and vulnerable countries, including Belize, to address climate finance, deforestation, and adaptation amid intensifying global climate threats.

Belize Halts Short-Term Tree Cutting Permits to Protect National Lands

Starting December 1, 2025, the Government of Belize will impose a five-year moratorium on issuing Short-term Forest Licenses and Petty Permits for tree cutting on national lands. The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, along with the Belize Forest Department, announced the measure following Cabinet’s approval, citing growing risks of forest depletion across the country.

Belize Launches Green Belize Initiative to Tackle Climate Change

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management (MSDCC) is advancing its Green Belize initiative to strengthen resilience and inspire change in the face of climate threats and environmental degradation. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), the initiative is anchored in a five-year GEF-6 project focused on protecting the Belize River Watershed, a vital resource that sustains nearly half of the country’s population.

Belize Forest Department Condemns Illegal Killing of Jaguar in Southern Belize

On September 29th, the Belize Forest Department confirmed the killing of an adult female jaguar in the Malacate area of Independence Village, Stann Creek District. The jaguar, weighing about 110 pounds, was found in an advanced state of decomposition with evidence indicating it had been shot. Inspectors also discovered that one of its canines had been removed, an act of tampering that is illegal. The carcass was subsequently buried. The Forest Department condemned the killing, reminding the public that jaguars are a protected species under Belizean law.

Belize Participates in CCAD Ministerial Meeting to Strengthen Regional Climate and Environment Cooperation

On September 10, 2025, Chief Executive Officer Milagro Matus and Grants and External Relations Coordinator Carlos Moreno represented the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management at the LXXIII Ordinary Council of Ministers Meeting of the Central American Commission of the Environment and Sustainable Development (CCAD), held in Panama City under the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Republic of Panama.

Belize’s Fourth National Climate Week 2025: Advancing Adaptation and Resilience through Inclusive and Equitable Policy Engagement

Belize Launches National Strategy to Strengthen Chemicals and Waste Governance

The Department of the Environment (DOE) officially launched Belize’s National Strategy and Action Plan for the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm & Minamata (BRS&M) Conventions and the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. Developed with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Strategy aims to strengthen national capacity for sound chemicals and waste management. The event also introduced the Draft Integrated Chemicals Management Bill, a key step toward modernizing governance in this sector.
