The Bonefish & Tarpon Trust to invest US$1 million in Belize’s Flat Fishery

The Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT), a prominent international conservation organization, has announced a $1 million commitment to flats fishery conservation in Belize. According to an official release, this funding marks the next phase of BTT's efforts in Belize, which began in 2006 with a focus on bonefish and permit science. This investment represents a three-year initiative aimed at supporting projects designed to enhance the resilience of Belize's flats fishery.

Omar Arceo receives prestigious Meritorious Service Award

Omar Arceo, also known as the ‘Doctor of the Flats,’ has been honored with the prestigious Meritorious Service Award for his significant contributions to the San Pedro Town island community, Ambergris Caye, and conservation. His work has brought recognition to the community and inspired others to join the cause. He was one of 28 distinguished individuals recognized at this year’s Tribute to Belizean Patriots ceremony, which took place on September 12th near the newly constructed Haulover Bridge in Belize City.

Omar Arceo offers summer fly-fishing training in Mexico

The Dr. of the Flats, Omar Arceo, conducted his final fly-fishing summer training camp in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The camp took place south of the municipality of Tulum at the Casa and Playa Blanca Fly-Fishing Lodges within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. Unlike previous camps where Arceo trained children, this time, the participants were fly-fishing guides working in the Mexican flats fishery industry. They were grateful for the training and the knowledge Arceo shared.

Omar Arceo teaches sustainable fishing practices at annual Fly-Fishing Summer Camp

San Pedro’s Omar Arceo, popularly known as the “Dr. of the Flats,” was busy during this summer break, traveling the country and teaching the youth about sustainable fishing. He joined the campaign in the northern part of the country and then visited several coastal communities across Belize, where he interacted with young children via the annual Fly-Fishing Summer Camp.

Team Big Sexy wins the San Pedro Classic Fly-Fishing Tournament; competition raises funds for two non-profits

The San Pedro Classic Fly-Fishing Tournament took place from August 1st to the 3rd and saw eight teams participate. The three-day competition included fishing and fun and showcased the importance of the fly-fishing industry in Belize. The top team, Team Big Sexy, won the grand prize of US$3,000, with Abner Marin and Zach Kolanda leading the team. Additionally, the tournament raised funds for the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust (BTT) and Omar Arceo's Youth Fly-Fishing Program.

San Pedro’s Annual Kids in Action Summer Camp Program is back!

The Youth Summer camp program, Kids in Action, is back in full swing, with 74 kids enrolled this year. The program, in partnership with the Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute (CZMAI), started on Monday, July 8th, and will run through Thursday, July 18th. It offers ten incredible days of fun and knowledge enrichment for the young minds of Ambergris Caye.

Omar Arceo invited to present on fly fishing and sustainable fishing in Cuba

San Pedro’s Omar Arceo, popularly known as the “Dr. of the Flats,” was invited to Cuba as an international expert to share his decades of experience and expertise in fly fishing and sustainable fishing practices. The interactive event, part of a week-long workshop that started on Monday, May 20th, will also promote rural, marine, and aquaculture opportunities and other alternative fishing practices connected to native ecosystems.

Islander Omar Arceo, affectionately known as the Dr. of the Flats in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, returned to his home island over the weekend after attending the 7th International Science Symposium and Flats Expo held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA. Arceo was one of the panelists discussing and answering questions in the Permit panel section of the event.
