Street rehabilitation and paving reaches San Mateo
The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has been working hard over the past few months to improve the streets and roads across the island. One of the areas that they are currently focusing on is San Juan, where they have paved and rehabilitated the streets to get rid of rocky and bumpy roads. The work in the San Juan area is almost complete and finished this week. After that, the rehabilitation and paving of roads will commence in the San Mateo area.

Road rehabilitation to soon start on Secret Beach Road
Over the past months, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has been busy upgrading the street/road networks across the island. These upgrades include an ambitious project to pave 7.5 miles covering subdivisions south of town, through downtown, and ending north by the San Mateo area. Other works include the rehabilitation of the southern road, which was recently completed. The next phase will address the conditions of the Secret Beach Road north of San Pedro, with work set to start on January 15th.

San Pedro Lions Club delivers funds to fire victims
On Wednesday, July 19th, San Pedro Lions Club presented financial assistance to three families affected by recent fires. The unfortunate incidents occurred during the week of June 19th, leaving victims in San Pedrito, DFC, and San Mateo with their homes destroyed and all belongings lost. The island Lions Club collected food and clothing for the victims as well. Through dollar drives, sales, and assistance from the community, they provided the needed funds to the families affected. With efforts and contributions from individuals across the island, the club raised $5,586.23, distributed among the three affected families totaling 17 individuals.

Discovery of turtle carcasses causes concern in San Pedro; HCMR discards poaching suspicions
The sight of turtle carcasses in the San Mateo area on Wednesday, July 12th, caused a stir of concern in San Pedro Town. Sea turtles have been protected in Belize since 1993. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve (HCMR) team quickly acted but later explained that the findings were unrelated to poaching.

San Pedro Smile Center Dental Clinic to host Mankato State University Dental Doctors
On Monday, February 27th, the San Pedro Smile Center Dental Clinic located at the Holy Cross Anglican School in the San Mateo area of San Pedro Town will again operate following a long pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The school clinic will welcome volunteers from Mankato State University in Minnesota, USA, for four days. From 8AM-4PM, the volunteering dentists will provide services to students up to 12 years of age. The program includes a second dental clinic at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, that is open to the public, both clinics are free. The professionals will also visit the San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School for an informative session.

Area Representative and SPTC host mobile health clinics, street rehabilitation, and clean-ups in San Mateo
On Saturday, February 18th, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) and Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez hosted a mobile health clinic in the San Mateo area where residents received free medical services. Some residents also joined the SPTC clean-up campaign, while some new streets were opened and others rehabilitated. According to the local authorities, similar activities will also occur in other subdivisions across San Pedro Town.

Mobile health clinic coming to San Mateo Subdivision this weekend
Residents of the subdivision of San Mateo, north of San Pedro Town, will have access to several medical services at no cost on Saturday, February 18th, via a mobile health clinic. The mobile health clinic is made possible through the collaborative efforts of Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez, San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and other organizations. The event will occur from 10AM through 3PM across from Pasadita Store.

Islander Mark Botes charged with two accounts of Obtaining Property by Deception
Police are investigating a case on the island where an island resident lost $23,000 to a local contractor. Police formally arrested and charged San Mateo construction laborer 32-year-old Mark Alexander Botes for ‘Obtaining Property by Deception.’ Botes was arraigned at the San Pedro Magistrate on Friday, October 14th, and was offered $5,000 bail that he could not meet. Botes was remanded to the Belize Central Prison, where he met bail and is now reportedly back on the island. He is scheduled in court in San Pedro on November 17, 2022.
