Traffic congestion in San Pedro a never-ending problem; SPTC sets regulations for large trucks

The problem with traffic congestion in San Pedro Town continues to increase despite past and present administration efforts. Now that students have returned to in-person classes, it is imperative to address vehicular congestion during peak hours to ensure their safety and that of other pedestrians, including tourists. As such, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has set a schedule for large delivery trucks to alleviate the traffic and avoid potential accidents.

Pre-approved passenger fares for water taxis have been released by the Belize Port Authority, who states it has not approved an increase.

Mayor weighs in on complaints about traffic department

The new administration at the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) created a traffic board intending to monitor the number of vehicles in town and is one of the entities approving permits for owning a golf cart/vehicle. Recently, a handful of residents have complained about the traffic department's process when applying for a vehicle permit. Some islanders are suspicious about the department; as a result, the SPTC said they would investigate the issue and assure that anyone with a clear justification needing a vehicle should not face many difficulties in getting such a permit.

San Pedro Traffic Department to enforce existing regulations starting November 15th

The San Pedro Traffic Department will begin to enforce several existing regulations starting on November 15th, ranging from traffic infractions to removing derelict vehicles from the streets and empty lots on the island. Residents are to adhere to the regulations, and any violations will result in the issuance of tickets/fines.

Excessive Noise from Motor Vehicles

The Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics through the Department of Transport hereby reminds owners and drivers of motor vehicles, particularly tractor trucks and motorcyclists, that operating such vehicles in a manner that causes excessive noise is prohibited. This is in accordance with regulations 128, 135, and 136 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations.

Island authorities to implement measures after an increase in traffic accidents

Traffic accidents are becoming an issue in San Pedro Town, mainly north of town, where over the past few days, the traffic department, first-aid responders, and police have responded to a series of accidents. A number of these incidents are linked to motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding. As a result, the San Pedro Town Council, along with the transport department and the local police formation, are working on rules to tackle the issue.

E-Governance and Digitalization Unit Supports Belize Motor Vehicle Registration and Licensing System

On June 23, 2021, the Government of Belize and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) hosted an achievement and handing over ceremony for the Belize Motor Vehicle Licensing and Registration System (BMVRLS). In 2017, both countries designed the project for an integrated and national transport system for the Department of Transport.

New regulation for golf cart rental owners

Effective August 1, 2021, the San Pedro Transport Department (SPTD) will be enforcing a new rule regarding golf cart rentals. All golf carts owned by a rental company will need to be labeled with the company’s logo/name, telephone number, and golf cart number. Failure to adhere to this measure will result in a fine.
