Residents unhappy with Boca del Rio Beach Reclamation Project
esidents of the Boca del Rio area in San Pedro Town have expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing beach reclamation project initiated by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC). This project began in October 2022 and aims to address decades of beach erosion and restore the local shoreline. It involves the creation of small dunes protected by geotextile nets, allowing time for sand to settle. While local authorities report positive initial outcomes, many residents remain skeptical.

Material secured for street rehabilitation in San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker
Large quantities of white marl and hardcore material have been acquired for street rehabilitation projects in San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker. Work to address the deteriorating streets has already begun on both islands. According to Area Representative Honorable Andre Perez, additional materials will be secured to continue the repairs in designated areas across San Pedro and Caye Caulker.

Tren Maya could reshape tourism in Belize
The Tren Maya project, a major railway initiative in the southeastern region of Mexico, will possibly expand into Belize. Belize's Prime Minister, Johnny Briceño, has officially proposed extending the train across the Hondo River to promote regional integration and boost tourism. The expansion would occur in two stages: first, a seven-kilometer track would be constructed from Quintana Roo to Belize; second, a route would connect Belize to Guatemala, passing through Tikal National Park.

Golf cart rentals banned from soliciting at San Pedro Ports of Entry
In San Pedro Town, a significant regulatory change has been implemented regarding golf carts at ports of entry. The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has officially banned golf carts from soliciting customers at these locations to address ongoing tensions between taxi operators and golf cart rental businesses.

Newly elected BTIA President Efren Perez visits San Pedro
The Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) San Pedro Chapter recently welcomed their newly elected national president, Efren Perez, who visited San Pedro Town from January 27th through 29th. This visit is part of an initiative to increase BTIA membership and share what the organization has accomplished. The organization believes that with a larger membership, they can enhance their advocacy efforts. While in San Pedro, Perez gave an exclusive interview to The San Pedro Sun, sharing his thoughts and vision for the future.

San Pedro police officers and Caribbean Villas recognized by the Belize Police Department
On Saturday, January 25th, four police officers from the San Pedro Police Formation and a local stakeholder were honored at an award ceremony held in the capital city of Belmopan. Officers Hector Esquivel, Leon Bradley, and Elian Robateau were recognized for their courageous response to a fire that occurred on December 29th in San Pedro Town.

Annual island visitor musician Kelly McGuire gives back to the community
Kelly McGuire, the Texas-based singer-songwriter, is currently in San Pedro, Belize, for his annual birthday celebration. He is known for his popular songs inspired by island life and actively engages with fans through performances and events during his stay. This year, he will host a special concert on February 6th for the Saga Humane Society.
