Saga’s Spooktacular Halloween Pet costume party scares up much-needed funds

The San Pedro Saga Humane Society held its first post-pandemic Halloween Pet Costume contest on Sunday, October 30th, at Toast Seaside Boozery and Grill. The annual fundraiser was a great success, with one of the best turnouts. Over 40 pets (primarily dogs and one cat) competed in Scariest, Funniest, Look-a-Like, and Glamorous categories.

The San Pedro Humane Society hosts one of its major fundraisers during the Halloween celebration. The non-profit organization raises funds to continue providing services to pet owners on the island housing abandoned or rescued animals. This year, their Spooktacular fundraiser costume Halloween party is on Sunday, October 30th, at Toast Seaside Boozery and Grill, located south of town, across from Mahogany Bay Village Area.

On Sunday, October 31st, Saga Humane Society in San Pedro Town held their 17th Annual Halloween Pet Costume Contest. This year, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, it was held virtually, offering pet owners the chance the win fabulous prizes. The annual event also serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit organization. Thanks to everyone's participation and other donations, this year's function raised a little over BZ$10,000. These funds will help Saga in their campaign to spay/neuter and vaccinate 100 dogs and cats.

Island pets at risk after two deadly viruses detected

Recently, islanders have reported the discovery of dead dogs around San Pedro Town. Many people suspected that the dogs had been poisoned. However, the local Saga Humane Society staff believes that the cause is a pair of deadly viruses; Canine parvovirus (Parvo) and Distemper. To prevent your puppy/adult dog from being infected, pet owners are encouraged to get them vaccinated as early as possible.

Jaguar spotted swimming off Ambergris Caye north coast

Fly-fishing tour guide Michael Peralta and his guests witnessed a rare sighting on the northwest coast of Ambergris Caye on Tuesday, September 14th while on their way to the fishing flats. They suddenly spotted something swimming in the water and to their surprise, it was far from a marine creature, but a full-grown jaguar.

Temporary ban on the importation of dogs into the US affects adoptions at Saga

The temporary suspension on the importation of dogs into the United States (US) as of July 14th is not only affecting dog lovers but future pet adoptions destined for the US from the island’s Saga Humane Society. The temporary ban implemented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was announced at the end of June and applied to high-risk rabies countries, including Belize.

Antillean Manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) Injured at Shipstern Lagoon

On April 10, 2020, an Antillean manatee that was recently released into its natural habitat by Wildtracks Rehabilitation Center in Sarteneja Village, Corozal was found with a spear injury to its head. It is believed that the manatee was injured anytime between April 9th to 10th.
