The SPHS female basketball team’s journey to the NSSSA competition began with their victory over the girls from Caye Caulker Ocean Academy on November 27th. The team then claimed the title of regional champions on December 7th at the northern regional competition held in Orange Walk Town.
The NSSSA national competition occurred in Belize City on December 12th and 13th, and the SPHS team first faced Georgetown Technical High School from the Stann Creek District. The southern players presented a tough challenge for the island squad; however, thanks to new techniques introduced in the later quarters, the island girls secured a crucial first victory with a final score of 30-19.
On the tournament’s second day, SPHS faced one of the strongest teams in the competition, Wesley College. The match was intense, with both teams determined to win the championship. The island girls had come a long way, and after establishing a lead, they maintained it throughout the game. With a well-coordinated game plan, the island team emerged victorious against Wesley College, ending with a comfortable final score of 16-10.
The team celebrated its achievement with the technical staff, bringing home the national champions trophy. The SPHS female team also expressed gratitude to Coach Paul Kelly for his dedication, passion, and belief in the team. Erick Santizo, the high school’s sports coordinator, congratulated the team and took the opportunity to thank the parents and the island community for their ongoing support of the teams and sports programs.
